Pandemic spurring health sector transformation: spokesperson

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an impetus to the government to carry out transformation in the health sector, government spokesperson for COVID-19 Reisa Broto Asmoro said here on Monday.

“This pandemic is a momentum for the government to transform the country’s health system. The Health Ministry is currently carrying out the health transformation whose focus is on six pillars,” Asmoro added.

She said that the six health transformations cover primary services, referral services, health security system, health financing system, health human resources, and health technology.

The health transformation has been inspired by the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed many lives and whose handling has involved a lot of state financing, she informed.

The pandemic has also shown that the quality of Indonesia’s health system must be improved by increasing the capacity of health workers, the types of services, and the availability of medical devices.

In transforming primary services, the government is striving to realize accessible basic health services by prioritizing preventive efforts and promoting health awareness.

Under the second pillar, the government is developing a referral service network for handling catastrophic diseases, such as stroke, cancer, heart, and kidney disorders, which contribute the highest to the mortality rate.

Under the third pillar, the government is seeking to realize a secure health system by accelerating pharmaceutical resilience and providing medical devices that can be produced domestically.

Meanwhile, to realize the fourth pillar, the Ministry of Health is working to ensure the just, effective, and efficient use of all funds spent by the public on treatment.

Under the fifth pillar, the government is targeting to realize uniform distribution of health services across the country by enhancing the quality and quantity of health workers.

Furthermore, as part of the sixth pillar, the government will form an integrated health system, named One Health (Satu Sehat), so that the data of all patients can be integrated.

Widodo seeks realization of EIB investment plan

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday, sought the realization of the European Investment Bank’s (EIB’s) investment plan for Indonesia.

“I welcome the European Commission’s support for Indonesia’s G20 Presidency and encourage the realization of cooperation in the energy transition, including the European Investment Bank’s investment plan in Indonesia,” he said in a press statement issued the same day.

The bilateral meeting between Widodo and von der Leyen was held ahead of the G20 Summit meeting to be held on Tuesday .

Widodo said that he has sought progress in negotiations on the Indonesia-Europe Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IU-CEPA).

Health investment vital for bridging pandemic PPR financing gap

The world must prepare health investment to address the financing gap for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR), director general of disease prevention and handling at the Health Ministry, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, has said.

The world significantly lacks investment in pandemic preparedness, thus it must be prepared, especially for handling severe implications of COVID-19, namely health and economic crises, he observed at a G20 side event here on Monday.

G20 is a multilateral cooperation group that comprises 19 countries and the European Union (EU). Indonesia, which is holding the presidency of the grouping this year, will host the G20 Summit in Bali on November 15 and 16, 2022.

During the G20 side event entitled “Redesigning Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response: Lessons Learned and New Approaches,” he noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught the world to ensure reliable and sustainable funding.

To achieve this end, redesigning the global health architecture has become important.

The World Health Organization and the World Bank have estimated the PPR gap to be around US$10 billion. Bridging this gap will not be easy, therefore, a funding mechanism has been created, namely the Pandemic Fund, Rondonuwu noted.

The Pandemic Fund has been unveiled as part of the Indonesian G20 Presidency. It has gathered US$1.4 billion from 15 countries and three philanthropic institutions so far.

The Pandemic Fund is expected to address the PPR gap as well as strengthen poor and developing countries’ resilience, he informed.

The fund had been proposed since the Italian G20 Presidency in 2021, but it was finally agreed upon and completed under Indonesia’s leadership this year.

He said he expects the fund to grow to meet its goal during India’s Presidency.

Meanwhile, founder and CEO of CISDI, Diah S. Saminarsih, said that the Pandemic Fund established under the Indonesian G20 Presidency is a strategic effort to cover the global health funding gap.

Through its G20 Presidency, Indonesia has the capacity to give voice to the interests of the low as well as lower-middle-income countries so that they can receive benefits through the Pandemic Fund, she added.

“This mosque will serve as a symbol of brotherhood, a symbol of friendship between the people of Indonesia and the UAE,” the President remarked while issuing a press statement after attending a series of events ahead of the G20 Summit.

The statement was streamed on the Youtube channel of the Presidential Secretariat on Monday night.

Widodo and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan inaugurated the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Banjarsari sub-district, Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday morning.

The inauguration of the mosque took place amid the Indonesian President’s hectic agenda ahead of the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Both leaders arrived at the mosque at 7:25 a.m. local time (UTC +7), following which they took a tour of the mosque and offered a short prayer.

Widodo and Mohammed bin Zayed then walked to the mosque’s front yard to sign a plaque and plant a tree together.

He spent some time greeting the residents gathered on the mosque’s grounds, following which he and Mohammed bin Zayed left the mosque.

Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as well as UAE representatives and Muslim figures attended the mosque’s opening ceremony.
