Ministry holds seminar on eco-industrial park for industrial zone

The Industry Ministry hosted a seminar on eco-industrial parks (EIPs) for the managements of industrial zones.at Maxxbox Orange County Lippo Cikarang in Bekasi district, West Java,on Monday. The seminar featured the ministry;s Director of Industrial Zoning Adie Rochmanto Pandiangan and two other speakers – chief technical adviser to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization Salil Dutt and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Ulsan College, Korea, Hung-Suck Park.

During the seminar, Pandiangan said that an eco-industrial park could improve the economic performance of industries within its scope through the pursuit of efforts to minimize the environmental impact.

In order to establish such a place, industries within an area would also need to contribute to the efforts–not just the management. He said he expects that 75 percent of industrial zones in Indonesia would be considered eco-industrial parks by 2027.

“Through this seminar, we hope that our industry tenants can have knowledge about the environment, so they can improve productivity and have global-class competitiveness,” Head of Community Industrial Services Sue Eunike Marlene, said after the seminar.

All managements of industrial zones who were invited to the seminar expressed their enthusiasm and keenly followed all topics discussed or brought up by the speakers, she added.

“The managements are very happy because the eco-industrial park seminar was hosted,” she said.

An eco-industrial park is an industrial area that is managed on the basis of a collaboration between the industry and people for economic and social benefits and improved environmental performance, Dutt said.

“Some advantages from eco-industrial park implementation include motivator in facing challenges, to enable industries to involve in exports better, encouraging industries to come up with innovations, as well as giving positive impacts on fund efficiency,” he said.

The seminar was also attended by three representatives of companies that have already implemented the eco-industrial park concept, such as PT Schneider Electric Manufacturing, PT ABB Sakti Industri, and PT Asahimas Chemical. They shared their experiences with EIP in their operations.

Through this sharing of experiences, industry tenants were expected to learn and implement those measures in their own companies.

The representative from PT Schneider Electric Manufacturing, Devina Satyapraba Raditya, said that her company has applied digital technology to monitor the use of energy and waste dumping.

“This use of digital technology can (help) conduct evaluation as well as reduce excess use of energy,” she said.

BMKG calls for disaster vigilance amid equipment breakdown

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked residents living on the south coast of Cianjur, West Java, to remain alert to the threat of tsunamis and earthquakes amid a breakdown of early warning systems.

“BMKG asks every local government and community to continue to increase vigilance to anticipate the worst as currently, the five tsunami early warning systems (TEWS) in the southern sea of Cianjur are not working,” Secretary of the Cianjur Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Rudi Wibowo, informed on Monday.

BMKG has readied officers and volunteers to help evacuate residents from the south coast of Cianjur.

The tsunami detection devices installed on the south coast of Cianjur, Cidaun, Sindangbarang, and Agrabinta are currently not functional, Wibowo said.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has checked the devices, but the Cianjur BPBD has so far not been able to confirm whether they have been connected or not.

According to Wibowo, the tsunami detection devices were reportedly damaged due to the weather and since they were installed in the waters for a long period.

“The damage (happened) a few years ago, and it has been reported. It was checked by BNPB just a few days ago, we are still waiting for the results,” he said.

Acting chief of Cianjur BPBD, Fatah Rizal, said that his agency is continuing to communicate with BNPB and BMKG regarding the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis in the southern sea of Java, including the Cianjur coastline since it is listed in the disaster red zone.

“We have readied 150 disaster resilient volunteers in three sub-districts to conduct surveillance and immediately report if they see signs of a disaster. We are also installing and adding evacuation route signs and (conducting) disaster education,” Rizal informed.

He also urged residents to be observant in reading disaster natural signs and evacuate immediately if they spot any sign.

Indonesia halts corn imports except for industries: Minister

Indonesia has stopped the imports of corn except for that used as raw material for industrial purposes, such as for producing sweeteners and other items, Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo stated.

“I would like to inform that we are no longer importing rice and corn, except corn used for industrial needs, including for producing sweeteners and others,” Minister Limpo stated at the Presidential Office, here, Monday.

On Monday meeting, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) instructed ministers to increase corn production, both for raw materials and post-harvest products, including those that had undergone the cultivation process, Limpo remarked.

The increase in production is in the form of land intensification and extensification. As for post-harvest production, the Agriculture Ministry will make several efforts, such as building post-harvest support facilities, such as silos and dryers.

“Hence, of course, this effort will help to reduce toxins in the corn and also to maintain the water content at above 14-20 percent to meet the needs of the industry market,” he remarked.

He later noted that corn production in Indonesia currently surpassed 18 million tons. The production will continue to be increased in an effort to meet the domestic requirements, including the industry. The government will also strive to increase corn exports.

“I can see that in 100 days from now, if we work hard, including following the order of Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (Airlangga Hartarto) to prepare farmer groups, land intensification, and land extensification, we can achieve that. God willing, we will ready the concept in the next one or two weeks,” Limpo stated.

On the same occasion, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government will encourage corn production in new lands in Papua, West Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, and North Kalimantan.

“With a total land area of 141 thousand hectares, 86 thousand hectares is new land for corn production,” Hartarto noted.
