Acronis’ Mid-Year Cyberthreats Report Finds Ransomware is the Number-One Threat to Organizations, Projects Damages to exceed $30 Billion by 2023

Increasing complexity in IT continues to lead to breaches and compromises highlighting the need for more holistic approaches to Cyber Protection

Acronis research unveils the top-10 most commonly impersonated brands in phishing emails.

The Acronis Mid-Year Cyberthreats Report 2022 found that brands such as DHL and Microsoft are the most commonly impersonated in phishing emails.

SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland, Aug. 24, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection, unveiled its mid-year cyberthreats report, conducted by Acronis’ Cyber Protection Operation Centers, to provide an in-depth review of the cyberthreat trends the company’s experts are tracking. The report details how ransomware continues to be the number one threat to large and medium-sized businesses, including government organizations, and underlines how over-complexity in IT and infrastructure leads to increased attacks. Nearly half of all reported breaches during the first half of 2022 involved stolen credentials, which enable phishing and ransomware campaigns. Findings underscore the need for more holistic approaches to cybersecurity.

To extract credentials and other sensitive information, cybercriminals use phishing and malicious emails as their preferred infection vectors. Nearly one percent of all emails contain malicious links or files, and more than one-quarter (26.5%) of all emails were delivered to the user’s inbox (not blocked by Microsoft365) and then were removed by Acronis email security.

Moreover, the research reveals how cybercriminals also use malware and target unpatched software vulnerabilities to extract data and hold organizations hostage. Further complicating the cybersecurity threat landscape is the proliferation of attacks on non-traditional entry avenues. Attackers have made cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance systems a priority of late. Successful breaches using these various routes have resulted in the loss of billions of dollars and terabytes of exposed data.

These attacks are able to be launched due to overcomplexity in IT, a common problem throughout businesses as many tech leaders assume more vendors and programs lead to improved security when the inverse is actually true. Increased complexity exposes more surface area and gaps to potential attackers, keeping organizations vulnerable to potentially devastating damage.

“Today’s cyberthreats are constantly evolving and evading traditional security measures,” said Candid Wüest, Acronis VP of Cyber Protection Research. “Organizations of all sizes need a holistic approach to cybersecurity that integrates everything from anti-malware to email-security and vulnerability-assessment capabilities. Cybercriminals are becoming too sophisticated and the results of attacks too dire to leave it to single-layered approaches and point solutions.”

Critical data points reveal complex threat landscape
As reliance on the cloud increases, attackers have homed in on different entryways to cloud-based networks. Cybercriminals increased their focus on Linux operating systems and managed service providers (MSPs) and their network of SMB customers. The threat landscape is shifting, and companies must keep pace.

Ransomware is worsening, even more so than we predicted.

  • Ransomware gangs, like Conti and Lapsus$, are inflicting serious damage.
  • The Conti gang demanded $10 million in ransom from the Costa Rican government and has published much of the 672 GB of data it stole.
  • Lapsus$ stole 1 TB of data and leaked credentials of over 70,000 NVIDIA users. The same gang also stole 30 GB worth of T-Mobile’s source code.
  • The U.S. Department of State is concerned, offering up to $15 million for information about the leadership and co-conspirators of Conti.

The use of phishing, malicious emails and websites, and malware continues to grow.

  • Six hundred malicious email campaigns made their way across the internet in the first half of 2022.
  • 58% of the emails were phishing attempts.
  • Another 28% of those emails featured malware.
  • The business world is increasingly distributed, and in Q2 2022, an average of 8.3% of endpoints tried to access malicious URLs.

More cybercriminals are focusing on cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. By exploiting flaws in smart contracts or stealing recovery phrases and passwords with malware or phishing attempts, hackers have wormed their way into crypto wallets and exchanges alike.

  • Cyberattacks have contributed to a loss of more than $60 billion in DeFi currency since 2012.
  • $44 billion of that vanished during the last 12 months.

Unpatched vulnerabilities of exposed services is another common infection vector—just ask Kaseya. To that end, companies like Microsoft, Google, and Adobe have emphasized software patches and transparency around publicly submitted vulnerabilities. These patches likely helped stem the tide of 79 new exploits each month. Unpatched vulnerabilities also tie into how overcomplexity is hurting businesses more than helping, as all of these vulnerabilities serve as additional potential points of failure.

Breaches leave financial, SLA distress in their wake
Cybercriminals often demand ransoms or outright steal funds from their targets. But companies do not suffer challenges only to their bottom lines. Attacks often cause downtime and other service-level breaches, impacting a company’s reputation and customer experience.

  • In 2021 alone, the FBI attributed a total loss of $2.4 billion to business email compromise (BEC).
  • Cyberattacks caused more than one-third (36%) of downtime in 2021.

The current cybersecurity threat landscape requires a multi-layered solution that combines anti-malware, EDR, DLP, email security, vulnerability assessment, patch management, RMM, and backup capabilities all in one place. The integration of these various components gives companies a better chance of avoiding cyberattacks, mitigating the damage of successful attacks, and retaining data that might have been altered or stolen in the process.

Chief of staff visits future Army headquarters site in Nusantara

Indonesian Army (TNI AD) Chief of Staff General Dudung Abdurrahman visited the site of the future Army Headquarters in the new capital Nusantara in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan.

“The Indonesian Army will follow up (on the visit) by establishing an Army Headquarters Sub-detachment, and we will formulate an evaluation based on our observation that we will hand over to the government,” Abdurrahman stated, as per the Army information office press statement received here, Wednesday.

The evaluation will include all calculations and suggestions to ensure that the position of the Army headquarters will be strategic to secure the new capital optimally, he remarked.

During the visit on Tuesday (August 23), the chief of staff heard details about the planned development of the Army headquarters from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing’s National Road Development Agency (BPJN) Head, Junaidi ST.

Abdurrahman then reiterated the Army’s commitment to supporting the central government in developing the new capital.

He said that the Army, through the VI/Mulawarman Regional Military Command, has provided support to the regional authority to ensure secure and smooth development of the new capital.

“(This includes) the plan to establish the Army Headquarters Sub-detachment,” he said.

Following the visit to the future Army Headquarters, the chief of staff also visited the Sepaku Dam construction site. The dam is expected to provide water to the new capital and surrounding regions, including the Speaker region.

Deputy Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Agus Subiyanto, Army Headquarters top brass, the Army central executing board head, and Army armament centre commander accompanied Abdurrahman during the visit to the future Army Headquarters site.

Domestic fruits should not be inferior to foreign ones: Maharani

Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani expected that based on the triad of quality, packaging, and branding, domestically produced fruits should not be inferior to those from overseas, thereby contributing to the national economic growth.

“The local fruit products in Indonesia should not be inferior to products from abroad in all aspects, such as in terms of the quality, packaging, and branding,” Maharani noted while reviewing PT Great Giant Pineaple Co. (GGPC) in Central Lampung District on Wednesday.

Maharani stated that with domestic fruits being able to compete in the global market, the stability of Indonesia’s domestically produced fruit exports could be maintained in a bid to support the national economy.

“Lampung is the largest pineapple exporter in Indonesia and the world, wherein (the product) comes in the form of canned pineapple packaging, pineapple juice, and pineapple concentrate. Hence, this must be continuously improved,” she noted.

She appealed to fruit producers in Lampung to work with plasma farmers as well as maintain production and exports.

“The relationship between companies and plasma farmers in Lampung must be in synergy. Do not limit (the relations) to buying and selling at market prices. As in PT GGPC, it has 10 thousand workers in pineapple, banana, guava plantations, and the coordination must continuously be maintained,” she remarked.

With sound relations between the company and plasma farmers, the pineapple processing industry could be developed even better, she remarked.

“The core relationship with plasma (farmers) in Lampung, such as at GGPC, is proof that Indonesia can (have strategic contribution) in global trade, while working together, and today, we will also export fruits from Lampung to Europe and the Middle East,” Maharani remarked.

Processed pineapple was a major contributor to exports in Indonesia. One of the tropical fruit exporting areas was Lampung, with the main export destinations to Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, and Argentina.

Lampung’s pineapple exports in 2020 were valued at Rp87 billion, while in 2021, the figure rose to Rp151 billion.

South Sumatra must strive to cut greenhouse emissions: ministry

The Environment and Forestry Ministry has urged South Sumatra province to actively contribute to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

South Sumatra is one of the provinces in the country that is considered capable of contributing to the greenhouse emissions reduction target because it has an expanse of forest, peat, and mangroves, which are still in good condition, acting director general of forestry planning and environmental management at the ministry, Ruandha Agung Sugardiman, said.

“It’s just a matter of handling forest and land fires; if they can be suppressed until they don’t exist, they will greatly contribute,” he added after delivering a lecture at the “Information Dissemination of Sub-National Indonesia’s Forestry and Other Land Use 2030 Net Sink” in Palembang on Wednesday.

He said the Paris Agreement requires Indonesia to describe and communicate post-2020 climate resilience actions in the Nationally Determined Contributions document and submit it to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

As per the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document, Indonesia is targeting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030 through its own efforts and 41 percent with international support.

South Sumatra has become an important province for focusing efforts to achieve the national target because it is still plagued by forest and land fires.

Sugardiman said, Indonesia did not want to be taken as a country sans commitment during the formulation of the Paris Agreement because it would be easy for the United Nations to assess the extent of the commitment based on satellite imagery.

Therefore, the Environment and Forestry Ministry formulated a work plan for pursuing the 2030 zero emission target at all levels, which requires active contribution from regional governments.

So far, Indonesia has been named as one of the countries most committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Two countries, namely the United States and Britain, have shown greater interest than other countries in providing funding to Indonesia to meet that end.

Indonesia is considered capable of achieving the zero emissions target by 2030 because it is also putting in other efforts besides handling forest and land fires, such as planting trees, maintaining forest areas, and restoring peat and mangrove areas.

“Regarding forest and land fires, South Sumatra is asked to be committed because if the incident grew even more severe, it is not impossible that donor countries will withdraw their commitments (41 percent of international support),” Sugardiman said.

According to head of the South Sumatra Forestry Office, Pandji Tjahjanto, South Sumatra’s forest area spans 3.4 million hectares and makes up 36 percent of the total area of the province.

He said that since the great forest fire in 2015, South Sumatra has continuously made improvements in handling forest and land fires.

Six years after the 2015 fire, the trend of forest and land fires in South Sumatra has continued to decline, he noted. Further, tree plantation and peat management improvements have been undertaken, both for protected peat and cultivated peat.

A member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives in South Sumatra, Riezky Aprilia, said that her party has continued to follow the greenhouse emission reduction program in terms of fund allocation from the state budget.

At least Rp200 trillion is needed to achieve the zero carbon target by 2030, so cooperation from the relevant ministries and institutions is necessary to meet the target set by the government.

“Of course, we will prioritize cooperation with Commission IV partners, starting from the Environment and Forestry Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry, and the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry first,” Aprilia added.

Need to bolster economies of regions to face global challenges: OJK

The economies of Indonesian regions need to be strengthened to help the nation face global economic challenges, Head of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Mahendra Siregar has said.

“Indonesia’s strength in facing the world challenges is domestic consumption, which means economic strength in the regions, throughout provinces, districts, cities,” he highlighted at the XXII Plenary Session of the Indonesian Bachelor of Economics Association (ISEI) here on Wednesday.

According to Siregar, Indonesia’s financial sector has remained quite stable amid the global supply chain disruption caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As the country’s financial sector is still stable, Indonesia does not need to join other countries in tightening monetary policy, he said.

“Our inflation is relatively under control, as are the capital market and money market, as well as banks whose conditions are getting healthier than when they were at the peak of the pandemic,” he pointed out.

At the same time, the value of banking credit restructuring has plummeted compared to 2021 and 2020, he underlined. However, several sectors, such as accommodation, food and beverage, and transportation, in several regions are still vulnerable.

“And it did not happen thoroughly, only in one or two regions. This is what should be capitalized. The overall strength is getting better at maintaining vulnerable sectors and strengthening foothold,” Siregar said.

The responsibility of monitoring OJK offices in the regions will be shifted to the head of the board of commissioners from the executive of banking supervision, he informed.

“Because the approach is no longer related to banking supervision alone, but also supervision of services, mobilization, and facilitation for the banking sector, capital market, non-banking financial industry, and the unbankable public. So, the (supervision) will be given to the head of (the board of commissioners) to realize an integrated and comprehensive approach,” he explained.

Palm oil industry should aid in increasing public welfare: Minister

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto believes that existence of the palm oil industry and its products should be able to increase the people’s welfare.

“We need to continue to encourage this high export potential in line with the price increase in palm oil commodities for the welfare of the community,” Hartarto noted at the 5th Borneo Forum organized by the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (Gapki), as quoted from an official statement received here, Wednesday.

He remarked that the palm oil industry should be able to build rural progress, reduce poverty significantly, and absorb a high number of workers.

In addition, development of this industry must prioritize aspects of sustainability for the environment and society in order to comply with the principles of sustainable development, Hartarto stated.

“The large contribution of the palm oil plantation sector must be accompanied by sustainability for the environment and the wider community,” he remarked.

He later highlighted that the government had implemented various comprehensive policy frameworks and encouraged multi-stakeholder cooperation to consider environmental sustainability aspects of this industry.

The policy framework is in the form of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Certification, the National Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil (RAN-KSB) 2019-2024, and the National Strategic Program on People’s Palm Oil Rejuvenation (PSR).

On the occasion, the minister also urged regional heads to oversee the sustainability of palm oil investment, provide legal certainty for businesses, encourage the implementation of the people’s palm rejuvenation (PSR) program, maintain partnerships between smallholder palm oil plantations and large plantations, facilitate problem-solving, and promote the palm oil industry in their area.

With such efforts, Hartarto believes that the palm oil industry would contribute to regional development.

As is known, Indonesia is the largest palm oil-producing country that accounts for 54 percent of the world’s market share. The export of industrial products is reported to reach more than 125 countries in the food, energy, and various other downstream industries.
