24.49% of West Sumatra women married before 19: BPS

This means that 25 out of every 100 women in West Sumatra have their first marriage at the age of below 19 years.

Padang, W Sumatra A national socioeconomic survey conducted in 2021 found that at least 24.49 percent of women in West Sumatra got married before turning 19, the provincial Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Office informed.

“This means that 25 out of every 100 women in West Sumatra have their first marriage at the age of below 19 years,” chief of the West Sumatra BPS Office, Herum Fajarwati, said, according to the West Sumatra Demography and Family Planning Profile released on Saturday.

Child marriage is related to a low education level, she said referring to a UNICEF report.

“Children who get married before marriageable age tend to have low education,” she noted.

The BPS has found that elementary school dropouts and graduates make up 75.79 percent of women who get married before 19.

The phenomenon of child marriage cannot be resolved by one sector alone, Fajarwati said.

“Many sectors should get involved to lower the child marriage rate, ranging from education, health, manpower sectors, etc.,” she said.

In the health sector, counseling about the use of contraceptives needs to be provided to women opting to get married before they turn 19 so that they can postpone pregnancy until they are 20 years old, she said.

“As per data, more than half of women who got married at the age of below 19 years did not use contraceptives,” she added.

If the matter is not addressed it could lead to a population explosion due to the high adolescent fertility rate, she said.

According to the Indonesian government’s regulation, the minimum age for marriage is 21 years for women and 25 years for men.

According to the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), solving the problem of extreme poverty can help reduce the likelihood of child marriage.

“From the population survey of BPS, (the incidence of) marriage among children aged 15–19 years is still very high,” BKKBN’s deputy for population control, Bonivasius Prasetya Ichtiarto, said recently.

The National Socioeconomic Survey showed that as many as 27.54 million people or 10.14 percent of the Indonesian population experienced extreme poverty in March 2021.

However, the number declined to 26.50 million people in September 2021 and dropped again to 26.16 million in March 2022.

Indonesian teams eye top-three ranking at Asian Rugby Sevens Trophy

Thus, the federation (PRUI) has been doing a great job.

Jakarta Indonesian men’s and women’s rugby sevens national teams are expected to rank in the top three at the 2022 Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy on August 6-7, 2022, at the Gelora Bung Karno Rugby Pitch, Jakarta.

Chairman of the Executive Board of the Association of Rugby Union Indonesia (PB PRUI) Didik Mukhriyanto stated here on Saturday that his side was grateful to Asia Rugby, the governing body of rugby associations of Asian countries, for entrusting Indonesia to host the event again after having successfully held the competition in 2019.

In Indonesia, rugby was competed for the first time in the National Sports Week (PON) at the XX Papua PON, held on October 2-15, 2021, to encourage the development of sports at the national level.

The PB PRUI chairman noted that the sports will also be contested at the XXI Aceh-North Sumatra PON in 2024

He expected eight events of rugby to be competed at the next PON.

Furthermore, he expressed hope that the Indonesian rugby national team would be able to partake in the next Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and Asian Games.

On the same occasion, President of Asia Rugby Qais Abdulla Al Dhalai said that this edition was the biggest Asian Rugby Sevens Trophy in history, with the participation of 19 teams, comprising 12 men’s teams and seven women’s teams.

“This is one of the biggest events in Asian history. We have never had 19 teams in one event. We hope the two days (of the implementation of the tournament) will be great — today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday),” he stated.

Furthermore, he lauded the development of rugby in Indonesia in recent years as was apparent from the success of the Indonesian women’s national team in defeating Nepal, with a score of 43-0 in their first match.

“Rugby in Indonesia is improving rapidly. We, Asia Rugby, monitors (the development of rugby) in 36 countries in Asia, and Indonesia is one of the countries with the fastest improvement. Thus, the federation (PRUI) has been doing a great job,” Dhalai remarked.

A total of 19 teams from 16 countries — Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, Nepal, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and Guam — are participating in the 2022 Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy.

The AMMAN International Tennis Championship provides a total prize of US$15 thousand, or around Rp225 million, for each series.

This event is an entry-level professional tournament that will be beneficial for the host country’s tennis to rack up international ranking points.

Every AMMAN International Tennis Championship series feature 32 main round slots and 48 spaces in the qualification round of a single event.

Meanwhile, in the doubles sector, only 16 pairs have the right to compete in the main round.

Indonesia emerges as para table tennis general champion in APG

Solo, Central Java Indonesia emerged as the general champion in the para table tennis sport branch in the 2022 ASEAN Para Games (APG) XI at Solo Techno Park, Central Java, by clocking an achievement of 27 gold medals.

Indonesia NPC’s table tennis coach Bayu Widihapsara Purba noted here on Saturday that during the final round, the Indonesian contingent bagged six gold medals from 10 events that it participated in.

The Indonesian para table tennis team secured a total of 65 medals comprising 27 gold, 16 silver, and 22 bronze medals.

“Indonesia also became the general champion of APG this year,” he remarked.

According to Purba, Indonesia’s achievement of gold medals in the table tennis branch exceeded the initial target of 12 gold medals.

Indonesia’s success in para table tennis is owing to the hard work and fighting spirit of athletes to become the best, Purba explained.

Table tennis athletes played splendidly and unbelievably managed to beat top athletes from other countries, he affirmed.

What comes as a surprise is the fact that Leli Marlina, who competed in the women’s singles TT5 class, and Sili Fadilah, women’s singles TT7 class, managed to bag a gold medal, he noted.

This achievement was beyond the country’s target, he remarked.

Workers freed from captivity in Cambodia return in good health: BP2MI

BP2MI will continue eradicating syndicates who recruit Indonesian migrant workers illegally

Jakarta The first 12 Indonesian migrant workers freed from captivity in Cambodia have been repatriated in good health, and will be assisted in returning to their hometowns, the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) has informed.

“Praise be to God, their physical conditions are all good; the 12 arriving migrant workers returning home are the first repatriation wave for the 62 freed migrant workers. We are also coordinating with the Cambodian authority for security measures and repatriation schedule arrangement,” BP2MI’s Director for Protection and Empowerment in the Asia and Africa regions, Brigadier General Suyanto, said in a statement here on Saturday.

The 12 repatriated workers arrived in Indonesia on Friday evening (August 5) and were brought to the Social Affairs Ministry’s Trauma Center Protection House (RPTC), he added.

Upon their arrival, they met police officers who prepared investigation reports and Social Affairs Ministry officers who documented them, the director informed.

He said that after undergoing routine procedures, the repatriated migrant workers will be offered training at RPTC and assisted in returning to their hometowns by BP2MI.

The remaining Indonesian migrant workers in Cambodia have been accommodated at the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, he added.

Suyanto then reiterated the government’s commitment to evacuating all migrant workers freed from captivity in Cambodia.

The government will also eradicate illegal recruitment practices that endanger workers, he said adding, the freed migrant workers fell victim to a fake investment company based in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, which recruited them through online means.

“BP2MI will continue eradicating syndicates who recruit Indonesian migrant workers illegally. Their modus operandi is to use a temporary visit visa and an online recruitment system. The (freed) migrant workers had no idea they would be placed in Cambodia,” the director said.
