Philips announces CEO succession

August 16, 2022

Frans van Houten to hand over as CEO to Roy Jakobs, a highly experienced international leader with a proven track record in delivering business value and extensive knowledge of Philips and its businesses

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced that Roy Jakobs is proposed to succeed Frans van Houten as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 15, 2022.

The Supervisory Board and current Philips CEO Frans van Houten have agreed that with the end of his third term in sight, the time is right for the change in leadership. After a comprehensive evaluation of external and internal candidates, the Supervisory Board has unanimously decided to propose Roy Jakobs as the next President and CEO of Royal Philips to its General Meeting of Shareholders.

Roy Jakobs brings a strong international, operational and transformational track record, as well as a deep understanding of Philips, which is critical at this important juncture in the company’s growth journey. Roy Jakobs has been successful in turning around businesses in customer-focused growth organizations and has effectively strengthened the company’s Connected Care portfolio through successful acquisitions across hospital and ambulatory care settings. Since taking on responsibility for the voluntary recall notification/field safety notice for specific Respironics devices on behalf of Philips, substantial progress has been made under his leadership in the execution of the comprehensive program aimed at delivering a resolution to affected patients as fast as possible in consultation with the relevant competent authorities.

An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of shareholders will be held on September 30, 2022, to appoint Roy Jakobs as President and CEO, effective October 15, 2022. Frans van Houten will act as advisor to the company – supporting the transition – until April 30, 2023.

“On behalf of the entire Supervisory Board, I would like to thank Frans for his transformational leadership of Philips over the last nearly 12 years,” said Feike Sijbesma, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Royal Philips. “Guided by his vision and the execution of the strategic roadmap, he has successfully led the company’s transformation from a diversified industrial conglomerate into a focused, global solutions leader in health technology. Building on its 131-year heritage, he repositioned Philips to significantly enhance the future value-creating prospects of the company. Frans led Philips with genuine care for its customers, patients, and its employees.”

“It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to lead the transformation of Philips, over the past 12 years, into one of the largest health technology companies in the world, bringing innovative solutions to help our customers deliver on the Quadruple Aim of better health outcomes, higher healthcare productivity and much improved patient and staff experience,” said Frans van Houten, CEO of Royal Philips. “I have very much enjoyed working with so many talented and committed colleagues and building long-term relationships with our customers and other stakeholders. While I am proud of our many accomplishments, much remains to be done to enhance the resilience of Philips to manage through current setbacks and adverse market conditions. I gladly hand over to my Executive Committee team member Roy Jakobs in the knowledge that he brings the experience, energy, and commitment to take Philips on the path forward, with continuity for our customers and determination to improve the health and well-being of billions of people in a sustainable and responsible way. I wish Roy every success over the coming years and will support him as much as I can along the way.”

Feike Sijbesma added: “We are pleased to propose to appoint Roy Jakobs as the new CEO of Philips. He has an impressive track record in driving performance improvements and value creation across a broad range of businesses – both within and outside Philips – including in health technology, coupled with extensive global leadership experience across Philips’ health systems and consumer businesses throughout the company’s transformation. He is also deeply involved in Philips’ continuous quality improvement initiatives and is fully committed to patient safety. We are convinced that he is the ideal CEO to take Philips to the next level of performance. On behalf of the entire Supervisory Board, I welcome him as the next CEO of Philips, and we wish him success in his new role to further shape Philips for increased value creation for shareholders and all other stakeholders.”

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead Philips to improve people’s health and well-being through innovation,” said Roy Jakobs, incoming CEO of Royal Philips. “I aim to build on the company’s strong foundation as a purpose-driven health technology leader with deep innovation and clinical expertise, to serve the needs of patients and consumers today and in the future. I look forward to working with Philips’ teams across the world to deliver a strong value creation trajectory for shareholders and all our other stakeholders. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Frans for his trust and the great support he has given me over the years.”

In close cooperation with Chairman Feike Sijbesma and the Supervisory Board, Roy Jakobs will further improve and strengthen Philips’ performance as a leading health technology company with a planned approach. Key priorities are to further deepen the quality and patient safety capability across the company, complete the Respironics field action in consultation with the relevant competent authorities, and lead Philips to resume its profitable growth trajectory by addressing current headwinds, including strengthening supply chain resilience to enable the successful conversion of the all-time-high order book into sales.

Global Leaders Honor Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon on the 10th Anniversary of His Passing

Late Evangelist Remembered as Extraordinary Pioneer of Peace and Unity

Washington, DC, Aug. 15, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Global Leaders Honor Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon

on the 10th Anniversary of His Passing

Late evangelist remembered as extraordinary pioneer of peace and unity

The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) joined with other organizations, friends, and families to honor the 10th anniversary of the passing of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon at a special program held near Seoul, Korea, on Aug. 14, 2022.

“Father Moon left a colossal legacy of peace of inestimable value in all aspects of human life,” said H.E. Brigi Rafini, Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel and Saharan States (CEN-SAD), which has 25 Member States and represents 650 million Africans. “Just like Father and Mother Moon, I invite us to enter and remain in history as peacemakers in the world.”

Rev. Moon was born in 1920 in the village of Sangsa Ri in what is now North Korea. From his birth in Japan-occupied Korea to his Sept. 3, 2012, death at age 92, Rev. Moon lived every day with a passion for God, and a determination to liberate humankind from evil, and to establish an ideal world of peace.

His passing brought sorrow to countless followers and allies around the world, but none more so than his wife of 52 years. “Father, I love you. I miss you. These past 10 years have been a tremendous journey to realize the promise I made before you,” said Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. “From now on, please do not worry. We will, without fail, complete our responsibility.”

Some 86 floral tributes and messages were sent from world leaders for the 10th anniversary, and the floral display from North Korea was so large that two men had to carry it on stage.

Chairman Kim Jong-un personally asked a North Korean peace institute to send flowers and a condolence message to the Moon family, said Dr. Yun Young-ho, Director-General of UPF International, who emceed the three-hour program at HJ Global Arts Center.

The North Korean message said, “Rev. Moon worked for the sake of world peace… and his achievements and legacy will be remembered for eons… We would like to wish prosperity and success to the International Family Federation and UPF.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2018-2021) recounted the arrests, tortures, and imprisonments of Rev. Moon’s life, including the North Korean Hungnam death camp that was liberated by UN forces led by US Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Rev. Moon survived this, and many more severe hardships, “by faith and a loving God,” said Mr. Pompeo.

In 1954, Rev. Moon created the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity (HSA-UWC) to call for “the unity of all Christianity and for each of us to love each other,” said Mr. Pompeo. Rev. Moon also stood immovably against God-denying ideologies, creating the successful Victory Over Communism program and newspapers, including The Washington Times, established in 1982 in Washington, D.C., to stand for faith, family, and freedom. “America must be moral, it must be strong, it must be free and have a free press,” Mr. Pompeo said.

“Rev. Moon and his peace work impacted millions,” said Cambodian Assemblyman Suos Yara, who delivered a message from Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Royal Kingdom of Cambodia.

Cambodian leaders are among those working with UPF, which was co-founded by Rev. and Mrs. Moon in 2005, in its quest to bring peace on the Korean Peninsula. In February, at the UPF World Summit 2022, world leaders signed the Seoul Resolution, which offers a roadmap to reconciliation. The resolution calls for “two states, toward one nation, one peninsula, one culture, one people,” said Mr. Yara. “This is a common vision for peace through mutual prosperity, interdependence, and universal values.”The formally named “Seonghwa Ceremony 10th Anniversary of the Holy Ascension of Sun Myung Moon, the True Parent of Heaven, Earth and Humankind,” told the story of Rev. Moon’s life, conveyed dramatically through dance, song, videos, pictures, and a live orchestra.

Highlights of the dynamic program included his 1935 Easter morning visitation from Jesus Christ who called him to carry forward the mission to build the Kingdom of God; the persecutions he endured when he started preaching; and his 1960 Holy Marriage to Mrs. Moon, after which they began sharing that “blessing” with other couples around the world. The program reviewed his thousands of speeches, campaigns, rallies, conferences, and visits held in all parts of the world, and his meetings with world leaders, including Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev and North Korea Chairman Kim Il-sung. Details are found in Rev. Moon’s memoir, “As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen,” and Mrs. Moon’s memoir, “Mother of Peace: And God Shall Wipe Away All Tears from Their Eyes.”

Mrs. Moon closed the event by offering all of the nearly 30,000 attendees silken-cloth bags filled with rice caramels, one of Rev. Moon’s favorite sweets. Recalling the video clips of Rev. Moon shown in the program, she said, “True Father spoke to you, didn’t he? What did he say?”

“I’m sure he didn’t say ‘be hopeless’ or ‘lead a meaningless life,’” she said. “Let us move forward in hope,” practice true love, be stewards of the Creation, “and lead lives centered on God,” she said.

Government to be cautious of rising inflation: MPR

Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo cautioned that rising inflation puts the national economy at risk.

“We must not become careless. Rising inflation can be a threat to the national economy,” Soesatyo delivered the statement during the 2022 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives and Regional House of Representatives here on Tuesday.

He cited data from Statistics Indonesia, which said that as of July 2022, Indonesia’s inflation rate sat at the level of 4.94 percent, and it was estimated to increase in the range of five to six percent in August.

“Even in September 2022, it was predicted that we would face the threat of hyperinflation, with inflation rates in the range of 10 to 12 percent. The rate of increase in inflation is coupled with biting food and energy prices, making it even more difficult for people, who have just (made it out of) the COVID-19 pandemic,” he remarked.

Soesatyo also drew attention to the skyrocketing world oil prices in early April 2022 that had been estimated to reach US$98 per barrel. This figure exceeded far beyond the 2022 state budget assumption of US$63 per barrel.

Moreover, the total subsidies for fuel, Pertalite, diesel, and LPG had reached Rp502 trillion, he noted.

“An extreme increase in oil prices will certainly make it difficult for us to seek additional subsidies to reduce pressure from inflation. No country has provided such a large subsidy,” he pointed out.

Furthermore, he also suggested to take into account Indonesia’s fiscal and monetary conditions in facing the risk of global crisis.

The issues in the fiscal sector included normalization of the budget deficit, maintaining the foreign debt-to-gross domestic product ratio and sustaining infrastructure financing.

“From a monetary perspective, the biggest challenge is bringing the inflation rate under control, maintaining foreign exchange reserves, and (maintaining) stability of the rupiah exchange rate,” he concluded.

BRIN focusing on innovations to support food, energy sovereignty

Until 2024, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will focus research on innovations to support food and energy sovereignty, BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko said here on Tuesday.

“The crisis caused by the pandemic in the past two years, followed by the commodity price fluctuation due to the Ukraine war, have brought fundamental lessons for Indonesia, that is, (on) the importance of food sovereignty, as well as health and energy (sovereignty),” he noted.

At the annual session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has not been fully resolved and the global economic situation has not been fully restored.

“Then, the war broke out in Ukraine, and food crisis, energy crisis, and financial crisis became inevitable,” he added.

As many as 107 countries have been affected by the pandemic, and some of them are expected to go bankrupt, while 553 million people are facing the threat of extreme poverty. Meanwhile, food shortages and famines are threatening 345 million people globally.

Indonesia’s abundant natural resources have become a strength that can be used to develop the country, Widodo said. However, the natural resources need to be managed in a wise and sustainable manner.

Downstreaming and industrialization must be undertaken to maximize added value for the sake of national interests.

Handoko also emphasized the importance of increasing the added value of local natural wealth to support food and energy sovereignty so that it can support national economic growth.

Local natural wealth-based products must not be sold as raw materials. They need to have added value so that they can be turned into high-quality products that can compete in the export market.

“The government and BRIN have realized the importance of added value for local natural wealth. Not only to meet domestic needs, but also to benefit from the global challenge amidst the crisis. Crisis creates a disaster and, at the same time, it creates new opportunities,” Handoko remarked.

House Speaker urges citizens to uphold Pancasila values

House Speaker Puan Maharani appealed to Indonesian citizens to continue to uphold Pancasila as the national paradigm and national identity.

“Disregarding Pancasila is the same as uprooting the nation’s identity from its deepest roots and betraying the mandate of the nation’s founding fathers. Replacing Pancasila will have an impact, (thereby leading to) the loss of character as a friendly, tolerant, and cooperative nation,” Maharani noted during the 2022 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives and Regional Representative Council here on Tuesday.

Maharani stated that all generations had the responsibility of developing the nation and state in the future in order to face difficult challenges and obstacles.

“We are still facing the uncertainty (caused by the) COVID-19 pandemic situation, geopolitical conflicts, global economic recovery in the midst of food vulnerability, energy, unemployment, global monetary pressure, environmental degradation, and the threat of natural disasters, and so on,” the house speaker affirmed.

She also highlighted the importance of cementing the national identity to prevent it from being compromised by transnational ideologies in the midst of the globalization era as well as technological and industrial advancements that connected people socially, culturally, economically, and politically.

Maharani said that various transnational ideologies that may not necessarily align with the national identity could easily slip in and influence citizens.

“We cannot isolate ourselves from foreign cultural influences. However, with a strong personality, foreign cultures can be filtered and integrated in the national culture,” she stated.

Hence, everyone plays a vital part in building national strength in which commitment and togetherness arise from love for the homeland, she affirmed.

“We, as a nation and state, are increasingly required to have the ability and power in the political, economic, social, and cultural aspects in order to realize an Indonesia that is sovereign and independent, with personality based on Pancasila,” Maharani stated.

She also opined that Pancasila could serve as a guiding star, pointing to the direction of the nation’s journey in order to materialize the spirit of community service for the progress in development of the nation and state.

The People’s Consultative Assembly conducted the 2022 Annual Session to commemorate the 77th Independence Day in the Plenary Meeting Room of the Nusantara Building on Tuesday.

The People’s Consultative Assembly’s Annual Session kicked off with the president’s speech and the 2022 Joint Session of the House of Representatives and Regional Representative Council.

The president’s speech pertained to the government’s statement on the 2023 Draft of the State Budget along with financial notes at the opening plenary session of the First Session of the House of Representatives for the 2022-2023 session.

APEC officials seek to address uncertainties, improve resiliency

Officials from APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) are currently holding a meeting to explore collaboration on building a more resilient and inclusive future for the Asia-Pacific region amid ongoing economic and geopolitical challenges.

The third APEC technical meeting cluster is currently underway in Chiang Mai, a city located around 700 kilometers north of Thailand’s capital Bangkok, with close to two thousand policymakers, officials, and private-sector representatives from 21 APEC economies in attendance, according to a release from the APEC Secretariat that was received here on Tuesday.

The meeting cluster will culminate in a two-day plenary session of senior officials on August 30–31, 2022, which will be chaired by Thani Thongphakdi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the 2022 chair of APEC Senior Officials.

It will be the last meeting of the year before the APEC Senior Officials prepare for Leaders’ Week, which is scheduled from November 14–19.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that the world economy will decelerate to 3.4 percent before slowing further to a 2.9-percent gross domestic product (GDP) rate in 2023.

The same scenario is expected in APEC, with a recent report projecting that the region’s economy will grow slower than expected at 2.5 percent this year and 3.4 percent next year.

Executive director of the APEC Secretariat, Rebecca Sta Maria, said that it is a particularly challenging time to be a policymaker, so the APEC region needs to keep its focus on building a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future since it is the key to future-proofing the region from crises.

“The intensified uncertainty brought about by recent events brings along the risk of distrust in globalization, multilateral institutions, and in each other,” she added.

“While there’s no denying that disagreements have spilled into multilateral forums and are of significance, they should not keep APEC member economies from banding together to prevent something as existentially damning as climate change, which will not be fixed, or even managed, by a world divided into distinct blocs,” Sta Maria said.

Ahead of the technical meeting cluster and APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in November this year, Sta Maria said that organizations like APEC will play a big part in building back the global economy by strengthening policy coordination and regional cooperation by adopting economic resiliency policies as well as ensuring transparency and predictability of trade.

Several ministerial meetings and high-level meetings will also take place alongside the technical meeting cluster, namely the APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting on August 19, the APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry on August 24, the APEC High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy on August 25–26, and the Food Security Ministerial Meeting on August 26.

Sta Maria contended that in today’s challenging environment, there is a role for multilateral institutions like APEC to help confront challenges in a coordinated, integrated, and cohesive manner, and ensure that all the work ultimately brings benefits to the people living in the region.

“We will continue to emphasize effective partnerships and cooperation across our region, including between the public and private sectors, specifically, the APEC Business Advisory Council, and other regional fora and key stakeholders, including the youth of our region,” she added.
