BKKBN holds Kampung KB competition to celebrate National Family Day

The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) is making efforts to facilitate the establishment of more good-quality family villages (Kampung KB) throughout Indonesia and will hold a competition to celebrate the 2022 National Family Day,

“Our Kampung KB (target) has (reached) 20 percent in all villages and sub-districts. (According to the) target of the government, in 2024, it must be 100 percent. Hence, our first target is that with this competition, the regional government will immediately establish a good-quality family village because this year, it has to be 30 percent,” Faharuddin, the Director of Population Impact Analysis at the agency, noted in a written statement here on Wednesday.

So far, the agency had facilitated some 16,793 good-quality family villages, all of which aimed to suppress the stunting prevalence in children, which was currently capped at 24.4 percent, he remarked.

The villages were developed as a means of strategic innovations to implement the agency’s priority programs, such as the Population, Family Planning and Family Development Program, health, social, and economic education.

The 29th National Family Day will be celebrated in Medan, North Sumatra, on July 7, 2022, by bestowing awards to good-quality family villages, with the best programs and activities at the national level.

The judgement criteria encompasses condition of the secretariat, population housing data, household income increase, village activities, source of funding for activities, as well as regulations from the supporting regional government and also from its management, and the development of healthy kitchens to overcome stunting.

He noted that the village keen on participating will compete with other villages in one district or city, out of which one winner would emerge and be sent as the representative at the provincial level. The provincial team will receive the profile of the village in question, and they would evaluate it before choosing three to four best villages to represent the province.

There would only be six winners of the competition at the national level that would be invited to the celebration of National Family Day in Medan, North Sumatra, to receive the award.

“I expect that the award for this good-quality family village can motivate the community to increase the number of (such) villages in each region,” he affirmed.

Presidential Instruction Number 3 of 2022 on optimization of good-quality family villages had been issued and signed by President Joko Widodo on May 20, 2022. The instruction aimed to facilitate the creation of independent and peaceful families.

Adopting pentahelix approach key to tackle stunting: BKKBN

The adoption of the pentahelix approach was necessary to handle the problem of childhood stunting in Indonesia, Head of the National Demography and Family Planning Board (BKKBN), Hasto Wardoyo, said in an online interview on Tuesday.

The pentahelix approach refers to the involvement of a number of elements starting from the government, the community, the business world, the media, and academicians, he added.

“The people also play an important role because people’s awareness and understanding is the primary key in the effort to prevent and handle stunting,” he explained.

Therefore, the agency will strengthen education and dissemination on the importance of stunting prevention among the public, he said.

“BKKBN will also continue to disseminate and invite all families to provide a balanced nutritional diet as one of the efforts to prevent stunting,” he added.

Balanced nutrition can be obtained from local ingredients, he highlighted.

“Prioritize local products, local ingredients to support the efforts to improve nutrition and prevent stunting,” he said.

The agency will also conduct strategic programs to improve the food intake of pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers, and infants using existing local foods.

Wardoyo also underlined the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of an infant’s life.

During the interview, he informed that the agency welcomes the six-month maternity leave provision in the Mother and Child Prosperity Bill (RUU KIA).

This is because the implementation of the regulation would support the effort to reduce the prevalence of stunting.

With the six-month maternity leave, mothers who have just given birth can focus on recovering and exclusively breastfeeding infants.

Hence, the agency will raise awareness on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in order to support the six-month maternity leave provision in RUU KIA.

Using mass transportation advised in tackling unhealthy air quality

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has vowed to encourage Jakartans to use public transportation facilities more in responding to the recently detected unhealthy air quality in the capital.

Highlighting IQAir’s recent data, Baswedan noted that Jakarta was the most polluted city in Indonesia.

“That is why for the past four years, we have seriously bolstered public transportation. One of the goals is to reduce emissions occurring in our city,” Baswedan stated when met at the ceremony marking the 495th Anniversary of Jakarta at the National Monument here on Wednesday.

Earlier, the air quality data agency IQAir ranked Jakarta as the most polluted city in the world, with an air quality index of 193 on Monday morning (June 20).

The governor admitted that Jakarta is not a city having clean air owing to the large number of emissions produced from motorized vehicles.

According to Baswedan, Jakarta is called the most polluted city in Indonesia owing to several factors, including mobilization from various regions.

Hence, he reminded the public of the importance of conducting emission tests on motorized vehicles operating in Jakarta and its surroundings to reduce air pollution.

He also noted that the existence of air quality problems in Jakarta can be an indicator that the government needs to pay attention to regulations with the public by utilizing public transportation.

Moreover, Baswedan noted that the Jakarta provincial government will also take strict actions by looking for areas emerging as sources of pollution, one of which was a company in Marunda, North Jakarta.

“Just like when we cracked down on a company in Marunda that caused pollution that had an impact on public health. (We) immediately sent a letter to stop (the operations),” he pointed out.

Thus, the governor has vouched to impose harsh sanctions on companies that contribute to pollution through measures including the termination of operating permits.

Indonesia-Bangladesh bilateral trade volume increased in 2021

The trade volume between Indonesia and Bangladesh surged in the last fiscal year, as both countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2022.

The Foreign Ministry’s data recorded the trade volume between both countries in 2021 at US$3.03 billion, surpassing the trade volume of US$1.76 billion recorded in 2020.

Foreign Ministry’s Director General of Asia-Pacific and Africa, Abdul Kadir Jailani, stated that both countries, with total population surpassing 400 million, have huge market potential, particularly as Indonesia and Bangladesh are Muslim-majority countries.

“To expand the scope of economic cooperation, we need to step forward to various opportunities in potential sectors, such as the energy, halal industry, telecommunication and information, and military equipment sectors,” Jailani stated during the commemoration event of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Bangladesh here on Tuesday (June 21) evening.

A high production capacity in the national industries of both nations also bolsters trade between Indonesia and Bangladesh, he affirmed.

The ministry’s official expounded that Indonesia and Bangladesh are currently deliberating a preferential trade agreement to enhance trade volume, which both countries are expected to promptly ratify.

“I believe that growth in the trade sector will be followed by growth in other sectors, such as investment,” Jailani remarked.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Indonesia Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman stated that Indonesia and Bangladesh have recorded positive achievements in the 50th year of diplomatic relations.

“The trade value between Indonesia and Bangladesh has grown significantly by 50 percent since the last 2021 fiscal year. We expect trade between both countries to continue to increase, and we can benefit from each other’s resources,” Rahman remarked.

Development of new capital’s basic infrastructure has begun: President

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday declared that the construction of Sepaku Semoi Dam and Mentawir Nursery in North Penajam Paser district, East Kalimantan, have marked the commencement of the new capital’s basic infrastructure development.

“The (construction of the) dam means that the development of basic infrastructure (for the new capital Nusantara) has been started. Next July, the construction of the main road from Balikpapan toll road will also commence,” the President said during a visit to Sepaku Semoi Dam, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat.

The development of Mentawir Nursery has accentuated the environmental sustainability aspect of the new capital’s development, he added.

Jokowi then instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, which has been tasked with overseeing the new capital’s development, to expedite the completion of Sepaku Semoi Dam earlier than scheduled.

The dam is expected to provide water to at least 1.5 million residents in the new capital, he noted.

“The water supplied (from the dam) will be ready-to-drink water,” he added.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono, reiterated that the dam will supply ready-to-drink water.

“If (the supplied water) is not potable, then our capital relocation will be meaningless,” Hadimuljono remarked.

Responding to the President’s request for accelerating the dam’s construction, the ministry’s director general of water resources, Jarot Widyoko, affirmed the ministry’s readiness to complete the dam by early 2023, much before the December 2023 deadline.

“By expediting (the construction process), we target the development to conclude by January or February 2023,” Widyoko said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani; Minister of State Secretariat, Pratikno; Minister of Investment/head of the Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia; head of the Nusantara Capital Authority, Bambang Susantono; and the Governor of East Kalimantan accompanied the President to Sepaku Semoi Dam on Wednesday.

Village fund is highly effective for infrastructure development

The village fund has been effective for infrastructure development in villages, Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Abdul Halim Iskandar stated.

“The utilization of village fund for infrastructure development is highly effective because the development is conducted through the self-management model instead of a third-party model,” Iskandar noted at a special cooperation event between the ministry and the Indonesian State College of Accountancy (PKN STAN) observed through online means here on Wednesday.

The minister highlighted that funding of Rp400.1 trillion (US$26.8 billion) had been disbursed for the village fund during the 2015-2021 period.

“In 2022 alone, village fund worth Rp68 trillion (US$4.55 billion) has been allocated to a total of 74,961 villages in 434 cities and districts throughout Indonesia,” he pointed out.

Iskandar remarked that 38,490 kilometers of village roads, 1,583,215 meters of bridges, and 45,517,578 meters of drainage had been constructed through the disbursement of village funds for development during the 2015-2021 period.

During the same period, the village fund had also been disbursed to boost economic activities in villages. Some 12,244 village markets, 42,317 village-owned enterprises’ activity units, 7,384 boat moors, 5,371 ponds, 80,120 irrigation units, and 247,686 earth retaining walls were funded through the village fund, the minister stated.

Moreover, the village fund was disbursed to develop public facilities comprising 29,210 sports facilities, 127,423 clean water installations, 443,883 public toilets, 14,401 village maternity facilities, 66,430 early-age education activities, 42,007 healthcare facilities, and 74,289 wells, he expounded.

“Infrastructure development has been bolstered because what residents need are infrastructures,” Iskandar noted.

He affirmed that the village fund’s positive impact on villages accentuated President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) commitment to developing Indonesia from villages and the rural and border areas.

Economy to grow 5.2–5.3% in second quarter: Bank Mandiri

The Indonesian economy will grow by 5.2 percent to 5.3 percent (year on year) in the second quarter of 2022, in line with accelerated vaccinations and the improving pandemic situation, state-run PT Bank Mandiri forecast.

“Our temporary forecasting, in the second quarter of 2022, (the economy) will grow by around 5.2 percent to 5.3 percent,” director of treasury and international banking at Bank Mandiri, Panji Irawan, said at a media gathering and macroeconomic outlook presentation, here on Wednesday.

An improvement in public expenditure will be one factor behind the projected economic growth, which is expected to be higher than the first quarter realization of 5.01 percent, he added.

Other factors comprise the growth in exports, increase in transactions during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, and rising prices of commodities in the global market, he said.

According to Irawan, based on the Mandiri Spending Index (MSI), public spending in the second quarter was higher compared to throughout the pandemic, with the spending frequency index reaching a level of 185.5 and the spending value index rising to a level of 159.9.

“This illustrates a significant economic recovery, with the frequency and value of spending going up. This is higher than the previous two years,” he noted.

As per the Mandiri Spending Index data, the spending level index in Bali and Nusa Tenggara islands gradually improved to reach 80.6 in the 2022 Ramadan period, its highest level during the pandemic.

The growth in the sectoral economy also became stronger, as evidenced by good imports of raw materials and capital goods, he said.

“Taking advantage of market opportunities in export destination countries in line with the global economic recovery,” he added.

Based on these factors, Bank Mandiri has predicted that Indonesia’s economic growth in 2022 will reach 5.17 percent (year on year).
