World Bank deems Indonesia’s economy among strongest amid global risk

The World Bank, through its report entitled Global Economic Prospect June 2022, deemed Republic of Indonesia’s (RI’s) economy as one of the strongest amid the current global risk situation, the Finance Ministry stated.

“Indonesia’s economy continues to show its resilience amid the ongoing global friction,” the Ministry’s Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF) Head Febrio Kacaribu noted here on Wednesday.

The World Bank’s conclusion is shown through its projection that Indonesia’s economy will be at the level of 5.1 percent in 2022, or only declining by 0.1 percent from the previous projection.

Within the report, the World Bank stated that Indonesia’s economy will be boosted by a rise in commodity prices.

The decline of Indonesia’s economy occurs amid the slowdown in global economic growth estimation to 2.9 percent this year due to escalations of various risks.

This figure declined by 1.2 percent from the previous projection in January as a result of global risk, specifically the war in Ukraine.

The slump in economic growth projections by the World Bank widely occurs in various countries, both developing and developed.

Europe experiences downward revisions by 1.7 percent, or from 4.2 percent to 2.5 percent. Russia is estimated to contract 8.9 percent or decline from the previous projection by 11.3 percent.

The United States and China also experience growth projection slumps with 1.2 percent and 0.8 percent each.

Meanwhile, for developing countries such as India, Mexico, and Thailand, they also experience quite significant projection declines with 1.2 percent, 1.3 percent, and one percent.

Indonesia’s economy is considered to be strong because it is estimated to only decrease by 0.1 percent from the previous prediction, as the country’s economic performance continues to improve supported by stabilizing pandemic circumstances.

The government will continue to maintain the situation to prevent pandemic spikes so that the people’s trust in carrying out economic activities can be maintained, Kacaribu noted.

One of the ways to do this is by encouraging vaccinations, which have now reached 74.2 percent of the population for the first dose and 62.1 percent for complete doses.

In addition, the state budget will continue to be directed to become an important instrument in responding to economic circumstances, including becoming a shock absorber to maintain the people’s purchasing power.

“This effort is carried out due to a potential energy, food, and financial crisis,” he explained.

The Public Works and Public Housing Ministry (PUPR) is building 10 flat towers for workers in the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate, Central Java Province.

Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono explained in his statement here on Wednesday that the construction of the flats is to offer alternative housing for workers at the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate.

“This is clear evidence that the government is present in providing decent housing. We hope (the housing) can improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries by having a more decent, healthy, and comfortable home,” Hadimuljono said.

He added that the flats can make the workers’ mobility more efficient, thus increasing their productivity.

Some ten towers of flats, barracks type, in the Batang industrial zone are being built in an area of 5,735 sq m, to accommodate many workers, Hadimuljono said.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Director General of Housing, Iwan Suprijanto, said he hoped that the utilization and designation of these flats will be according to the plans.

“The construction of these flats is expected to encourage the development of the (Batang) Integrated Industrial Estate in Central Java,” Suprijanto said.

Each of the flat towers is designated to have five floors that can house 257 people, he added.

The development of the workers’ accommodation is sourced from the ministry’s state budget of Rp351 billion, he added.

According to the ministry’s data recorded by the e-monitoring system on Wednesday, the progress of the construction has been following the work plan, with Package I reaching 93 percent, Package II 87 percent, and Package III 80 percent.

Furthermore, according to Director of Flats Aswin Grandiarto Sukahar, the government also provides public facilities to support the residents’ comfort, such as residential roads, clean water and sanitation networks, places of worship, and sports facilities.

Through her statement on Wednesday, the Ministry’s Competency and Management Ministerial Special Staff, Vita R. Yudhani, noted that there are three major violent incidents within education: bullying, sexual violence, and intolerance.

Various form of bullying and violence while studying needs to be prevented and handled seriously because they can cause complicated impacts to students.

“To wipe out these three sins, there should be a collective movement, not just from victims, but also the people closest to them,” she noted.

“We need to help one another to create an education space that is safe from violence,” she said.

This collaboration was carried out by holding a webinar, entitled Bullying and Violence Prevention Education.

Disabled women experience layered discrimination: National Commission

The Head of the National Commission for Disability, Dante Rigmalia, said that women with disabilities experience layered discrimination.

They also needed an inclusive approach that ensured the fulfillment of their rights, both in urban areas and in the outermost regions of Indonesia.

In the Women 20 (W20) event discussing women in rural areas and disabilities, Rigmalia said that Law Number 8 of 2016 concerning Persons with Disabilities outlined four specific rights for women with disabilities and seven rights for children with disabilities.

“Women with disabilities experience layered discrimination because they are women and people with disabilities, as well. Women with disabilities experience various vulnerabilities related to poverty, economy, education, health, socio-cultural, and family relationships,” she said during a virtual event followed in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Women with disabilities often experience stigmas, which are one of the biggest problems experienced by them, Rigmalia added.

She noted that women with disabilities were considered asexual and unable to marry, give birth to children, take care of the family, and many have not received formal education.

“Thus, women with disabilities who live in rural areas experience big challenges,” she said.

The fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities, especially women, must be carried out while agreeing that disabilities are an integral part of development that is fair, equal, and non-discriminatory.

She said that this could be done with the awareness that women with disabilities were equal women and were citizens of the country.

“This could be done by encouraging inclusion that emphasizes awareness, accessibility, involvement, and support for people with disabilities, both in urban, rural areas, and in the outermost, remote, and disadvantaged areas. We believe this target could be achieved,” Rigmalia added.

KAI, Basarnas join in supporting LRT Jabodebek safety

State railway firm PT KAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to support the safe operation of the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT Jabodebek).

The MoU was inked by KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo, and Basarnas head Vice Marshal Henri Alfiandi, here on Wednesday.

Hartantyo said, before the launching operation of LRT Jabodebek on August 17, 2022, that safety is crucial, and that is why his party cooperates with Basarnas.

“This cooperation with Basarnas is not only for preventive efforts, but also for when contingency action is needed. This LRT Jabodebek is operated all above (ground) or elevated, so we must maintain the level of safety more than that of the usual trains,” Hartantyo explained.

He pointed out that the MoU signing aimed to improve coordination, harmony, and mutual support for each task, function, and authority in handling emergency conditions.

Furthermore, Hartantyo said, the MoU encompasses cooperation in the field of sharing data and information, handling emergency conditions and accidents in railways through search and rescue activities, exercises, resource utilization, and increasing the capacity of human resources.

KAI and Basarnas are committed to supporting and succeeding the LRT Jabodebek operations, in terms of anticipation and handling emergency events, he affirmed.

Currently, he said, the progress of the light rail transit has reached 82.7 percent.

On the same occasion, Vice Marshal Alfiandi commented that the first possible access to reach the location during emergencies is via air, which can be reached by helicopter.

“With the addition of helicopter fleets, Basarnas will be better prepared to provide SAR services in case of emergency incidents on the LRT Jabodebek train lines,” he said.

Ministry urges Indonesian Hajj pilgrims to comply with baggage policy

The Religious Affairs Ministry has urged Indonesian Hajj pilgrims to comply with baggage requirements to prevent inconvenience during departure to Saudi Arabia, an official said.

“In the last four days, some pilgrims were found to be bringing an excessive amount of cigarettes, which they must unpack at the airport. Departing pilgrims must be attentive on this issue to prevent inconvenience if they are required to unpack their luggage,” Religious Affairs Minister’s special staff for media and public communication Wibowo Prasetyo said while presenting his press statement here on Wednesday.

The ministry’s Directorate General of Hajj Organisation has issued a circular on the baggage policy that informed pilgrims about the maximum luggage weight, permissible luggage, and prohibited items in the luggage, he said.

The official regretted that some pilgrims still violate the baggage requirements, despite the information having been disbursed earlier.

“(The regulation) has also regulated policies on carrying medicines, as well as prohibition to carry the Zamzam water in luggage,” Prasetyo noted.

The regulation restricts pilgrims’ luggage to 32 kilograms of checked luggage — except for pilgrims that are part of Surabaya embarkation point, who are restricted to carry 28 kilograms of checked luggage — 7 kilograms of carried luggage, and a small passport bag, he said.

General aviation regulations, such as the prohibition to carry explosives and weapons, gas and aerosol, and liquids over 100 mg, as well as the requirement to pack sharp items, such as scissors and razor only on checked luggage, are also valid for Hajj pilgrims, the special staff continued.

Saudi’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) also prohibit Hajj travelers from packing Zamzam water — fresh water with a distinctive taste which Muslims believed is divinely originated — in checked and carried luggage, he added.

“This regulation is to anticipate (violations) in the pilgrims’ return trip to deter them from committing violations, such as by wrapping the Zamzam water tube with aluminium foil, carrying the water in a pipe, or other tricks,” Prasetyo remarked.

Meanwhile, a total of 8,702 Indonesian pilgrims had arrived on the fifth day of Hajj departures from Indonesia. Some 1,949 more pilgrims, divided into five flight groups in four embarkation points, are scheduled to depart on Wednesday.
