New Survey Research Conducted in Partnership with FreedomPay and Cornell University Highlights Gen Z’s Attitudes on Data Privacy and Sharing

Gen Zers are more willing to share biometrics info than details from their social media accounts

FreedomPay

How well do you know your customers?

PHILADELPHIA, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — New research released today from FreedomPay, conducted in partnership with Cornell University, a leader in Hotel Administration and Hospitality Management, explores Gen Z student’s attitudes towards data privacy and their willingness to share their personal information. Age, email, income, and GPS location were among other personal details the study explored and participants willingness to share with payment platforms and merchants.

The research – which surveyed 200 Cornell Generation Z students, defined as those born in 1995 or later – found that the perceived privacy level of a piece of information has a significant impact on participants’ willingness to share with third parties, such as banks and retailers.

To start, the researchers first determined how participants might categorize the privacy level for several pieces of data. Placed on a 6-point scale, with 1 equaling extremely unlikely to share and 6 equaling extremely likely to share, the data items were sorted as follows:

Privacy Level Data Items Average Willingness
Low Gender 5.24
Name 5.09
Age 5.09
Email Address 4.76
Date of Birth 4.59
Phone Number 4.04
Medium Shopping Preference 3.40
Shopping History 3.36
Biometrics 3.31
Expected Monthly Expense 3.03
Income 2.91
Social Media Account 2.78
High GPS Location 1.95
SSN 1.74
Medical Record 1.71

Rewards Incentivize Sharing
The findings indicate that customers are more inclined to give out personal information if there is a reward involved, and participants were clear about how much – and what data – they would be more willing to share.

Within these privacy level categories of low, medium, and high, data in the medium category was the most likely to be swayed by a monetary reward. The research also suggested that Gen Z appears to be generally less willing to share their personal information than other groups.

The study found that a $15 reward incentive seemed to have limited impact on respondent’s willingness to disclose high-level privacy details. On the other side of the spectrum, a monetary reward also seemed to have a minimal influence for low level data sharing, considering that participants are generally more agreeable to part with this information.

Taking a closer look at the data, in offering Gen Zers a $15 reward, their willingness to share data increases across the three privacy categories:

  • 11% more likely to share low-privacy data
  • 27% like to share medium-privacy information
  • High-privacy data is more likely to be shared 24%

Additionally, the research revealed preferences in terms of the rewards offered for sharing information as well:

  • Participants prefer cash discount to loyalty points (at 69% and 31% respectively)
  • They are likely to choose loyalty points if that value is 20x greater than cash discount value
  • For those Gen Zers who prefer loyalty points, food & beverage was the most preferred category (at 44)
  • The least popular options include debit cards, gas, grocery stores, and the hospitality industry
  • Other participants were equally likely to choose food & beverage and retailers equally

Among the generations, Gen Zers earned the lowest score revealing they are less willing to share personal details than other generations – re-emphasizing that this generation does place a high priority on privacy issues.

“We were so delighted to be able to work with these outstanding students, who were able to uncover some truly great insights about Gen Z and how they think about data and their threshold for sharing,” said Liesl Smith, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales Enablement at FreedomPay. “While they are privacy-oriented and have clear priorities on what to protect – one student shared that her social media accounts were as important to her as her Social Security number – there are also clear opportunities for retailers and merchants to reach these consumers with the right mix of promotions.”

“Our students have enjoyed being able to partner with FreedomPay on this excellent research,” noted Aija Leiponen, Professor of Strategy and Business Economics at Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. “All partners were fully engaged which enabled our students to truly dive in and try to uncover the fundamentals of this generation and how they view and protect their data privacy.”

Nobel Prize-winner confirms among largest learning gains ever measured in international education in NewGlobe-supported schools

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A Nobel Prize-winning economist has confirmed ‘learning gains among the largest ever measured’ in schools by any major study in emerging markets.

The study, led by Professor Michael Kremer, 2019 Nobel Prize winner, finds children living in underserved communities receive over 53% more learning in NewGlobe supported schools throughout their early childhood and primary education compared to students in other schools.

The findings were announced by Professor Kremer at the Education World Forum and suggest a potential solution to learning poverty.

Replicated across public education systems, the gains would put African children from underserved communities on track to outperform or match peers in countries with incomes four times higher.

The groundbreaking study finds children taught using New Globe’s methods are three times more likely to be able to read at age seven. The World Bank estimates 90% of 10 year olds in Africa can’t read.

Professor Michael Kremer

The most disadvantaged students gain the most. Girls make the same learning leap as boys.

NewGlobe delivers a standard deviation increase of 1.35 in pre-primary learning and 0.81 in primary learning, easily in the top 1% of learning gains ever rigorously studied at scale in emerging markets.

The results are an affirmation of NewGlobe’s integrated learning system – used by governments across Africa and South Asia to support a million students today and growing year-on-year.

Learning gains comparison

Learning gains in NewGlobe-supported schools compared with others studied

The two-year study is based on a large-scale randomized control trial of more than 10,000 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Kenya.

  • After two years, primary students taught using NewGlobe’s methods are nearly a whole additional year of learning ahead of students in other schools.
  • For pre-primary students, two years’ teaching using NewGlobe’s methods puts them a year-and-a-half of additional learning ahead of other students.
  • 82% of Grade 1 students – six/seven-years-old – in NewGlobe-supported schools can read a sentence, compared with 27% in other schools.
  • Students starting from lowest learning levels gain the most. NewGlobe-supported students outperform their peers across all test scores, but with differences greatest for students with the lowest prior learning.

Professor Kremer said:

“The effects in this study are among the largest in the international education literature, particularly for a program that was already operating at scale… attending schools delivering highly standardized education has the potential to produce dramatic learning gains at scale, suggesting that policymakers may wish to explore incorporation of standardization, including standardized lesson plans and teacher feedback and monitoring, in their own systems.”

Source Intelligence Releases Human Rights Assessment Solution

The SaaS solution identifies the risk of human rights violations within supply chains in response to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla., June 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Source Intelligence, the industry-leading SaaS company for supply chain compliance and transparency, announces the release of its Human Rights Assessment (HRA) solution to prepare companies for the enforcement of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). While the HRA solution was created in response to the UFLPA, its functionality is universal, encompassing a vast number of regulations worldwide.

“Per the rebuttable presumption, goods produced in Xinjiang, China are automatically presumed to be made with forced labor. When the UFLPA becomes effective on June 21, 2022, all products from that region will be detained in customs,” explains Mike Flynn, Chief Product Officer. “We set out to create a solution to help our customers remain compliant with this new regulation.”

The HRA solution layers a multi-tier supplier assessment with a proprietary risk scoring algorithm and geographic regional risk overlay to provide users with a single, comprehensive supply chain view. The supplier risk data enables companies to immediately develop an action plan and due diligence program to remain compliant with a growing list of human rights due diligence laws.

“Most companies do not know who their suppliers are or how they are operating, which means they cannot fully comply with forced labor regulations,” says Jackie Madarang, Director of Product and Regulatory Compliance. “The purpose of the HRA solution is to gather and evaluate supplier data to find the highest risk of human rights violations regardless of industry, region or regulation.”

The HRA supplier assessment uses universal principles and requirements for human rights protection and identifies areas of risk for human rights violations with the supplier’s operations and their supply chain locations. The evaluated areas include supply chain tracing, universal principles, global regulations, policies and practices, country, and region. With all five of these assessment areas, the solution is the most comprehensive on the market.

“Bottom line – the purpose of the HRA solution is to protect people,” states Madarang. “As part of responsible business conduct and a human rights due diligence process, it’s designed to identify and stop human rights abuses.”

The Source Intelligence Human Rights Assessment solution is available now and is recommended to be implemented as soon as possible, as the UFLPA, in addition to current regulations, will restrict products presumed to be made with forced labor from entering the U.S. To learn more about human rights regulations, interested parties are encouraged to contact Source Intelligence and request a demonstration.

About Source Intelligence: Source Intelligence is the leading provider of SaaS Supply Chain Compliance solutions with over 100 years of regulatory and compliance expertise. Source Intelligence solutions are backed by industry experts to gather and validate supply chain data for over 300,000 companies for regulatory compliance, risk management, and ESG initiatives.

Minister outlines four sectors supporting digital transformation

Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate, through a press statement on Wednesday, drew attention to four sectors that play a role in supporting the acceleration of digital transformation.

The first sector that supports this is regulation. The minister opined that an investment-friendly legal umbrella will create jobs and produce an economic derivative.

“Digital sovereignty can only be achieved if we have an adequate regulation umbrella. It is to ensure our digital sovereignty and also to open space for investment,” he explained.

Adequate regulation will allow Indonesia to fill and master its digital space. Indonesia’s digital economic potential is projected to expand.

In 2025, Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to grow to US$146 billion, or around 40 percent of the ASEAN’s digital economy. By 2030, the value of Indonesia’s digital economy is expected to even reach US$315 billion.

The second concerns the availability of an adequate frequency spectrum within the telecommunication ecosystem.

Plate’s ministry is currently conducting frequency spectrum farming and refarming to suffice for the development and adoption of new technology.

The minister noted that Indonesia requires a frequency spectrum of 2.047MHz for digital transformation.

The minister urged telecommunication operators to observe the frequency spectrum allocation during refarming for ensuring more efficient management.

This will not only be beneficial for the state’s revenues but also for the development of the national economy and/or other national telecommunication demands, he explained.

The telecommunication sector is the third one that supports digital transformation. Currently, telecommunication infrastructure is being expanded across Indonesia.

To support the development of telecommunication infrastructure, Plate’s ministry implements blended financing, specifically for the development of microwave link and fiber link, as well as multifunction high-throughput satellite, with a capacity of 150Gbps.

Moreover, the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency strives to complete the development of base transceiver station (BTS) in the outermost, underdeveloped, and frontier (3T) areas.

Lastly, quality human resources are also necessary to manage the adopted technology.

Electric buses expected to improve air quality: official

Electric buses are expected to improve the quality of polluted air because of the elimination of motor vehicle emissions, the head of Inter-City Public Transportation Sub-Directorate of the Transportation Ministry, Handa Lesmana, stated.

“It is hoped that if there are many electric buses, the air quality will improve,” Lesmana said during a webinar here on Wednesday.

Air pollution poses a serious threat to society, especially in urban areas with a high density of motor vehicles, he said.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Lesmana noted, the large number of vehicles not being used proved to have an effect on improving air quality.

Therefore, the Indonesian government encourages electric-based public transportation to realize its zero-carbon emission goal by 2060, he added.

Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo previously said that vehicles must become environmentally friendly.

However, there are still many challenges in popularizing electric vehicles in Indonesia, such as increasing the existence of charging stations, Lesmana pointed out.

“The constraints of electric buses are still the battery technology, which is risky for long trips,” he said.

Lesmana said that the government has created regulations to support the use of electric buses so that it can execute policies that support the use of environmentally-friendly vehicles. Existing regulations can be adjusted to the latest technological advances, he added.

“The important thing is to maintain safety, even though there are changes in regulations, they must be in line with safety,” he said.

Furthermore, Lesmana added, the government has a target of implementing electricity-based urban mass transit, where at least 90 percent of mass transportation in 34 provinces will be based on electricity by 2030.

The government has a program for electricity-based tourism transportation, which will be realized in 2025, that cover Lake Toba, Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Lesung, Tana Toraja, Borobudur Temple, Mandalika, Mount Bromo, Wakatobi, Labuan Bajo, Morotai and Likupang, he said.

Government has given five million hectares of social land: Jokowi

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said that for five years the government had given more than five million hectares of social land to farmers, 324 hectares of which were on Java Island.

“We do not only give the big portion. The big ones are divided by 100 thousand hectares, 10 thousand hectares, and 25 hectares. The small ones are also given to the farmers for transparency,” Jokowi noted in Batang District, Central Java, on Wednesday.

By having land with a social forestry decree, people can access the land freely, he added.

“Without it, it will be hard for farmers to work. The social forestry land is important to open up businesses for the rights of farmers and the people,” Jokowi said.

However, he said there were several shortcomings in the use of social forestry land, namely assistance in facilities and management.

Jokowi also asked the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, to issue a ministerial decree (SK) and accelerate the land redistribution.

The President said that currently, the agriculture situation in Indonesia remains difficult after facing a COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that this has not only happened in Indonesia, but 220 countries have experienced the same thing.

“Once we are able to recover from the pandemic, the second problem arises, namely the conflict in Ukraine. Right now, many countries have started to run out of food. This is a blessing in disguise for us since we must be able to take advantage of this situation. Do not abandon the land. We must make the best use of it,” Jokowi noted.

In Batang District, the President invited farmers to plant crops that produce staple foods, such as rice, corn, cassava, and porang.

“Farmers must be able to take advantage by planting rice, corn, or porang, because other countries need it. This is our opportunity,” he added.
