Traffic accidents in N Sumatra fall drastically during Eid

The number of traffic accidents in North Sumatra fell drastically to 18 during the seven days of the Ketupat Toba Operation this year from 52 in the corresponding period of last year.

Despite the decline, Eid al-Fitr homecoming travelers must remain vigilant and exercise caution while driving in order to prevent traffic accidents, spokesperson for the North Sumatra Provincial Police, Senior Commissioner Hadi Wahyudi, said on Thursday.

The Traffic Directorate of the North Sumatra Provincial Police informed that 7 people were killed in road mishaps during the seven days of the Ketupat Toba Operation this year compared to 12 during the same period of last year.

The number of people sustaining serious injuries also fell to 11 from 21, while the number of people suffering light injuries dropped to 17 from 47.

During the Eid al-Fitr holidays, the North Sumatra Provincial Police set up inter-district/city security and service posts as a precautionary measure to reduce the number of traffic accidents, Wahyudi said.

“Travelers who feel tired while driving, please come to the rest area or command post to take rest,” he appealed.

Police chief asks tourist site operators to apply health protocols

National Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has appealed to operators of tourist sites across Indonesia to strictly apply the health protocols to curb COVID-19 transmission during the Eid al-Fitr holidays this year.

He made the request while reviewing the preparedness for the application of the health protocols during the Eid holidays at Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park in Badung district, Bali.

“On this occasion, I always remind the people to continue to maintain and implement the health protocols, particularly to wear masks (while visiting) tourist sites,” he said in a written statement released in Jakarta, Thursday.

He also urged all operators to prepare strategies and regulations related to the application of the health protocols for tourists.

In addition, he appealed to the entire community to stay disciplined in following the health protocols, including wearing masks, keeping physical distance, and washing hands, while celebrating the Eid holidays with their families.

“Please prepare rules related to the health protocols so that visitors and operators of tourist sites remind each other, that we must continue to implement the health protocols up till now,” he said.

The strict application of health protocols is a part of anticipatory measures to control the COVID-19 transmission rate after the Eid al-Fitr holidays this year.

Moreover, during the Eid holidays, many visitors will head to tourist sites until the weekend. The number of visitors is expected to return to the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level, he said.

“Of course, we also predict other tourist sites will experience the same thing. Therefore, we are not boring to remind (the public) of the health protocols that we must always maintain. Thereafter, we can control the COVID-19 transmission rate,” he said.

According to a report, 435,308 tourists came to Bali by air and sea during the Eid holidays, he noted.

In addition to boosting economic growth and tourism in Bali, the increase in tourist arrivals must be accompanied by strict health protocol observance, he said.
