Jokowi to issue regulation on national capital’s governing authority

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will issue a presidential regulation on the governing authority of the new national capital, according to an expert staff from the Presidential Staff Office.

“We are currently conceiving (the structure of) the national capital authority, and a presidential regulation will be issued for this purpose,” the Presidential Staff Office expert staff, Wandy Tuturoong, stated in a video retrieved from the office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The presidential regulation will ensure good governance for the national capital, he affirmed.

“Everyone has understood the principle of good governance and its importance, and we have considered this factor as well. However, we must also weigh the importance of public participation at present,” the expert staff emphasized.

Residents are encouraged to monitor and provide inputs for authorities in devising the capital authority leadership after the presidential regulation is enacted, he stated.

The expert staff also countered criticism from some members of society and denied that the government had hastily deliberated on and ratified the National Capital Bill.

The bill was passed after being comprehensively discussed by the government and legislature and inputs being sought from relevant stakeholders and experts, he stated.

“The general public must understand that the authority, particularly the National Development Agency, has been intensive in its communication to deliberate on the bill draft, the presidential regulation, and also the development master plan since the earlier period,” Tuturoong remarked.

He urged members of the public to participate in the next step of the capital relocation to ensure any inputs from stakeholders will be addressed in its process.

“Cooperation between the public society and the government is vital to ensure success in our efforts to relocate the national capital,” the expert staff stated.

Government should give rewards to disaster volunteers: DPD speaker

Regional Representatives Council (DPD) speaker A. A. LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti appealed to the Indonesian government to laud and give rewards to the volunteers involved in disaster handling in the country.

In his written statement received here on Wednesday, Mattalitti assessed that giving rewards and praising those disaster volunteers were deemed important, as they had helped the government in handling various disasters in Indonesia, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides, and earthquakes.

“The involvement of volunteers in disaster handling is extraordinary. Personally, I highly salute and laud them for their support,” he remarked.

Mattalitti noted that facts on the field reflected the high levels of enthusiasm among the community or volunteer groups from the community in handling disasters.

The DPD speaker remarked that volunteers at times even spent from their pockets to reach the disaster locations.

Moreover, some of the volunteers temporarily left their jobs to help disaster victims, he pointed out.

“They leave their families for days and even weeks,” he added.

To this end, Mattalitti assessed that those volunteers deserve rewards from the government.

He noted that at least, the rewards can, in a way, make up for the time, efforts, or money spent, although the volunteers harbored no expectations in return.

“I think the volunteers do not expect anything in return because they are sincere in helping the disaster victims. Nevertheless, the government should give attention to them. At least, it (the reward) can help to meet their basic needs and serve as a sign of gratitude,” he stated.

Mattalitti noted that the government of Batu City, East Java, can serve as an example for the government in giving rewards to disaster volunteers.

He noted that the Batu city government had offered assistance in the form of basic needs to volunteer gravediggers that helped the government in the funeral process during the COVID-19 pandemic.

National curriculum to be reviewed in 2024: ministry

The national curriculum will be reviewed in 2024, Head of the Educational Standards, Curriculum, and Assessment Agency of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) Anindito Aditomo has said.

“The national curriculum policy will be reviewed in 2024 based on evaluations during the learning recovery period,” he said during a working meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR), which was accessed online from here on Wednesday.

According to Aditomo, before the pandemic, schools in Indonesia implemented the 2013 Curriculum. Then, from 2020 to 2021 amid the pandemic, schools implemented either the 2013 Curriculum or the Emergency Curriculum.

Meanwhile, in 2021–2022, schools can choose to implement the 2013 Curriculum or the Emergency Curriculum, while schools that are part of the Sekolah Penggerak (Activator Schools) and Center of Excellence Vocational High Schools programs will implement the Prototype Curriculum, he explained.

During the learning recovery period from 2022 to 2024, all schools will have a choice between the 2013 Curriculum, the Emergency Curriculum, and the Prototype Curriculum, he informed.

“In 2024, the national curriculum policy will be determined based on the evaluation of the curriculum implemented during the learning recovery period,” he said.

Aditomo affirmed that the ministry will continue to monitor the implementation of the Prototype Curriculum.

In addition, it will also provide training and guidance for teachers and school principals through programs such as Guru Penggerak (Activator Teachers), Sekolah Penggerak (Activator Schools), and Center of Excellence Vocational High Schools, he added.

“It is estimated that in 2024, the ecosystem would have been achieved: there will be many teachers, principals, school administrators who will understand the new learning philosophy and become partners for other schools,” he said.

The essence of education is not just content but what students can achieve through learning, he remarked.
