Minister urges international travellers to abide by quarantine policy

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has asked international travelers to comply with the health protocols and the quarantine policy regulated by the government.

“I beg you once again to restrain yourselves from (traveling) abroad. And if you go abroad, comply with the health protocols; you must conduct a seven-day quarantine. Do not ask for a dispensation,” he stressed at the ‘PPKM Evaluation’ online press conference, accessed from here on Monday.

The minister said that he and other officials underwent quarantine after returning from overseas trips.

He then appealed to people to avoid traveling abroad for the next two or three weeks to prevent the importation of new COVID-19 variants.

“If possible, don’t go abroad in the next two weeks, or the next three weeks,” he urged.

According to the minister, even though the Omicron variant can transmit faster, it is less severe in nature.

“Like what the Minister of Health mentioned earlier, although it (the Omicron variant) is not that dangerous, if many people catch it simultaneously, it can be risky,” he cautioned.

The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Indonesia in March 2020. According to data provided by the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of January 10, 2022, at least 4,266,649 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the country, while 4,116,202 people have recovered, and 144,136 people have succumbed to the virus

On December 16, 2021, the Health Ministry confirmed the first Omicron case in Indonesia, with a janitor at the Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital, Jakarta, diagnosed with the virus. So far, the case count for Omicron in Indonesia has increased to 414.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has targeted 150 thousand college students to partake in various internships through the Freedom of Learning in Campus (MBKM) Program in 2022, a threefold increase from the participant count in 2021.

“We will prepare some 40 percent of them to become digital talents,” the head of state remarked here on Monday.

Jokowi affirmed that the MBKM program’s participants would take up internships in well-known companies to ready them to become superior human resources.

The MBKM Program is part of the government’s attempts to improve public welfare in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted.

It opens up a plethora of opportunities for college students to hone their skills in line with their talents and interests by directly gaining work life experience as a foundation for their future careers.

“We will continue to guarantee people access to education, especially for the unprivileged ones, by providing assistance for the elementary to higher education sectors,” he stated.

Earlier, Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim had expressed hope that more university leaders would become ambassadors for the MBKM Program.

“The beautification project of houses and stalls along the Mandalika Circuit main road has commenced,” deputy head of Central Lombok district, HM Nursiah, said.

As the beautification project is under the direct control of the central authority, the district government’s task is to assist the central government and ensure the project’s success, he added.

“The project is to support the MotoGP championship event that will be hosted at the Mandalika Circuit and to present a favorable image to visitors of the circuit’s surroundings,” Nursiah said.

The authorities are targeting to complete the program before the MotoGP championship in March 2022, the deputy head added.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Nusa Tenggara Region I Housing Provision Agency head, Rini Dyah Mawarty, said that a total of 196 homes and stall units along the Triputri Roundabout, located northwest of the Circuit, till the Mandalika Circuit main gate will be renovated.

“Our current priority is to beautify the segment two of the houses and stalls located in front of the Mandalika Circuit main gate, while the first and third segment of the houses and stalls will be renovated gradually,” she informed.

The local wisdom and architectural style will be taken into account in devising the new design for the houses and stalls, the agency head said.

The architecture style of the Sasak people, who are native to Lombok Island, will also serve as a reference for the final design, she added.

“We hope the province and district authorities will lend their support to this project,” Mawarty said.

International community urged to protect Palestinian people

Palestine has called on the international community to stand firmly to protect the Palestinian people from attacks and crimes committed by Jewish settlers.

“We call on the international community to stand firmly to protect the Palestinian people from occupying power against Palestinians, their properties and land, as well as the Palestinian prisoners detained without legal protection,” Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Zuhair Al Shun stated during the 57th Anniversary of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement in Jakarta, Monday.

The ambassador noted that Palestine also called on the countries that had not recognized independence of the State of Palestine to immediately recognize its sovereignty as an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital, deemed to be the rights in the Palestinian struggle for liberation.

“I reaffirm that the Palestinian people will remain in their own land, struggling for freedom, independence, and sovereignty over their land, as well as establish an independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital,” Al Shun stated.

The ambassador noted that Palestine also highly lauded the Republic of Indonesia, its people, and government, for the strong support that did not stop and would never stop for the Palestinian People.

“On behalf of the Embassy of the State of Palestine, we extend our warm greetings and great appreciation for your presence on the occasion of the 57th Anniversary of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement,” the ambassador affirmed.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi had earlier stressed that Indonesia would continue to support the Palestinian people in the fight for justice and freedom.

“Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi conveyed Indonesia’s consistent stance toward Palestine that the Indonesian nation will continue to stand with the Palestinian people to fight for justice and independence,” spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Teuku Faizasyah noted in Friday.

Faizasyah’s statement came in response to the Israeli media reports that said the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was keen to normalize relations between Indonesia and Israel.

“The topic of Israel was raised by State Secretary Blinken at a meeting with the Indonesian foreign minister during a visit to Jakarta,” Faizasyah noted.

Forest restoration to minimize deforestation: expert

Restoring forest areas can help reduce deforestation and achieve the forestry sector’s net sink target, according to IPB University’s Professor of Forestry, Herry Purnomo.

“First, fix the forest areas, especially production forests that (have been converted) into plantations. This must be prevented,” he told ANTARA here on the occasion of One Million Tree Planting Day, which is celebrated every January 10.

Purnomo, who also serves as a researcher at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), said restoration efforts sometimes become complicated when forest functions are switched and they are already inhabited by communities.

However, he still pushed for a re-consideration for small farmers and law enforcement for bigger entrepreneurs.

“Second, conduct reforestation on degraded lands,” he suggested. Moreover, the certainty of land management needs to be elucidated, he stressed.

The third step is the economic development of forest areas through efforts such as ecotourism so that forests exert a large positive economic influence on the surrounding communities, he explained.

Support from non-governmental players, such as non-profit organizations, and the private sector is also urgently needed to encourage sustainable forest management, Purnomo said.

In particular, he highlighted some products that can be utilized that do not cause deforestation.

“It actually aligns (with the efforts against forest degradation). We do not need to be enemies but use it to strengthen anti-deforestation in Indonesia (which can open) opportunities to get a high market,” he explained.

In addition to the three steps, he said that tree plantation by various parties can have an impact on reforestation efforts. However, the planting movement needs to be followed up by a commitment to taking care of the trees to ensure their sustainability, he added.

Jakarta to continue full offline schooling despite Omicron spread

Jakarta schools will continue 100-percent face-to-face learning (PTM) despite the recent increase in Omicron cases, deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

“For the time being, the PTM will be continued. A decision will be made later. We await the policy from the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, and the Education Office,” he informed.

Patria asked Jakarta residents to continue to implement the health protocols and to limit their activities and mobility even after they have been vaccinated.

“We urge residents to stay at home, be more careful, be cautious, do not let your guard down, and do not be euphoric even though you have been vaccinated,” he remarked.

“We know that Omicron has a faster infection rate than the other variants,” he pointed out.

Separately, head of public relations at Jakarta’s Education Office, Taga Radja Gah, said that full offline learning will continue to be carried out in the capital.

Face-to-face learning will be conducted based on Four Ministers Joint Decree on Learning Activities during the COVID-19 Pandemic Guide, despite Jakarta’s public activity restriction (PPKM) status rising to Level 2, he added.

However, the policy could be revised if the PPKM level in Jakarta is raised because the PPKM level is one of the benchmarks for full face-to-face learning evaluation, he said.

According to the joint decree, only regions with Level 1 or 2 PPKM can conduct 100-percent face-to-face learning.

If the PPKM status in Jakarta becomes Level 3, then a new policy will be formulated, which will allow face-to-face learning at 50-percent capacity, much like in 2021, the official explained.

As per data provided by the Jakarta provincial government, 10,429 schools in the capital city launched 100-percent face-to-face learning at the beginning of 2022.
