Al-Araby

Indonesian authorities said on Wednesday they will push a boat containing 120 Rohingya Muslims back to international waters despite calls from the United Nations refugee agency to allow the passengers to disembark after being adrift for days off the country’s northernmost province of Aceh. In the Rohingya people’s native Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist country, the Muslim minority group faces a genocide from the security services. The boat off Indonesia’s Aceh province is reportedly leaking and has a damaged engine, is floating in the open sea in harsh weather, and may be at risk of capsizin… Continue reading “Indonesia to push back boat with 120 Rohingya refugees”

EnBiotix, Inc. Closes $11M Pre-Merger Financing

BOSTON, Dec. 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — EnBiotix, Inc., a rare disease company currently focused on chronic respiratory disorders, today announced the closing of an $11M pre-merger, convertible note round of financing (“the Financing”) comprised of Vectura Group plc, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Sanford Biosciences LLC.

The Financing was led by Vectura Group plc (“Vectura”), a leader in inhaled therapeutics and drug-device combination development. In conjunction with the Financing, EnBiotix and Vectura have also entered into an agreement whereby EnBiotix will engage in exclusive negotiations with Vectura relating to a potential strategic alliance covering one or more of EnBiotix’s inhaled drug products.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (“the Foundation”) joined the investment round primarily to fund confirmatory long-term safety studies related to EnBiotix’s lead product ColiFin®, which would be conducted in parallel with a planned global Phase 3 clinical study.

Sanford Biosciences LLC (“SBL”), a past investor in EnBiotix, also joined the Financing. SBL is the life sciences investment arm of T. Denny Sanford, the investor behind medical research philanthropy such as the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, CA, the non-profit, integrated healthcare provider Sanford Health, one of the largest in the Midwestern region of the U.S., and a number of life science company investments.

The Financing is designed to enable initiation of a number of EnBiotix activities related to the planned global Phase 3 clinical study of ColiFin® in cystic fibrosis patients. ColiFin® is an inhaled colistimethate sodium product in-licensed by EnBiotix from PARI Pharma GmbH for worldwide rights outside of Europe. ColiFin® has been approved in Europe since 2010, where it is a front-line therapy for the management of chronic pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis patients. EnBiotix expects to move ColiFin® into Phase 3 clinical trials in 2022.

Proceeds from the Financing will help fund EnBiotix’s obligations related to its ongoing Phase 1 study of inhaled murepavidin in cystic fibrosis patients, a program which is also the subject of a separate Foundation award and a European Union Innovative Medicines Initiative grant. The Phase 1 inhaled murepavidin clinical study recently enrolled its first subjects.

Proceeds from the Financing will also be directed towards R&D expenses related to EnBiotix’s other product development programs and ongoing and future legal, accounting and other general and administrative expenses related to its planned merger with Polyphor AG (SIX:POLN), which is expected to close by year-end 2021.

Jeffrey D. Wager, M.D., Chairman and CEO of EnBiotix, commented, “It is very motivating for all of us at EnBiotix to secure this financing from such a globally recognized syndicate of life science investors. The proceeds from the financing will significantly accelerate our plans to deliver innovative products to cystic fibrosis and other rare disease patients with significant unmet needs. In addition, we look forward to further discussions with Vectura to negotiate a strategic alliance agreement to further advance our pipeline and accelerate the development and commercialization of our inhaled drug portfolio.”

Building caring and sharing ASEAN Community through sports

Despite being affected by COVID-19 restrictions, the Tokyo 2020 Games were held successfully last summer amid hardships due to the prolonged pandemic.

It proved that sports have continued to bring global communities together in the spirit of sportsmanship and unity and send out the messages of perseverance, hope, and resilience.

Apart from spreading positive vibes and messages, the Tokyo 2020 Games also gave us positive energy and allowed us reprieve from all the negative news.

It was a particularly historic moment for the ASEAN, as all three Olympic gold medals came from women athletes: Indonesia’s badminton doubles team Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu, Philippines’ weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and Thailand’s taekwondo athlete Panipak Wongpattanakit, while in the Paralympic Games, some 30 percent of all medals bagged by ASEAN countries were secured by women para athletes.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is the most gender-balanced games since its establishment. This year, women constitute 48.8 percent of the 11 thousand Olympians, increasing from 45.6 percent in 2016 and 44.2 percent in 2012.

It all occurred despite all the COVID-19 adversities and restrictions affecting the world’s socio-economic growth.

The ASEAN remains committed to ensuring full access to opportunities that will help women and girls thrive and actively participate in all decisions that affect building their livelihoods and independence, including in sports.

Building on such momentum, as long-time dialogue partners, the ASEAN and Japan work hand-in-hand to promote gender equality in and through sports.

This started back in 2017, when the ASEAN and Japan set priorities for cooperation in sports and agreed to work together in strengthening the participation of women and girls in sports and advancing sports for persons with disabilities, among others, in light of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The ASEAN Secretariat hosted the virtual ASEAN #WeScore Talk Show on December 3, coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.

This event forms part of a Japan-funded Campaign, ASEAN #WeScore, involving 10 appointed women as sports ambassadors: Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah (Bruneian polo athlete), Sokha Pov (Cambodian traditional martial arts athlete), Leani Ratri Oktila (Indonesian para-badminton athlete, gold and silver medalist of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games), Soulamphone Kerdla (Lao PDR’s national swimming team head coach), Farah Ann Abdul Hadi (Malaysian gymnast), Soe Soe Myar (taekwondo athlete and referee from Myanmar), Hidilyn Diaz (Filipino weightlifter), Amita Berthier (Singaporean fencer), Panikpak Wongpattanakit (Thai taekwondo athlete), and Tuyet Van Chau (Vietnamese taekwondo athlete).

Appointed by their respective countries as role models, the lineup of ambassadors demonstrates the value of inclusion and diversity in sports: male- and female-dominated sports, modern and traditional sports, and Olympic and Paralympic Games.

For several years, we have known that female athletes and sports professionals across the world continue to experience gender discrimination and even violence. Going back to the proportion of the female population in the region, the low recognition of social values in participation and achievements of women and girls in sports, as well as doubts in women’s leadership and negotiation skills to take lead in the sports sector might slow down our growth in the sports industry as a whole.

Representation matters. Thus, the remarkable accomplishment and leadership of our 10 women sports ambassadors in their respective fields is something that the ASEAN strives to amplify to inspire and connect people across the region, including youth, in several ways.

Using sports to raise awareness to educate the public about gender equality, inclusion, and resilience is something that the region should and will pursue.

Drawing from the conversation with the 10 women sports ambassadors, the ASEAN needs to think beyond the achievements of women and girls in sports activities and competitions.

Paying attention to women’s leadership and career paths in sports institutions, their safety and protection as well as stronger support to para sports platforms are measures that the region will make in order to keep our athletes motivated and help them thrive in any uncertainties.

For the next five years, the ASEAN sports sector will strengthen cooperation towards an active ASEAN Community where sports grow with integrity and serve as an essential means in advancing socio-cultural development and promoting peace, guided by the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025.

As stated in the 2013 Vientiane Declaration on Sports Cooperation in ASEAN by the sports ministers, the region’s cooperation in sports has to be strengthened in realizing the vision of an ASEAN Community to forge a common regional identity—and build a caring and sharing society. (INE)

2020 AFF Cup first leg: Indonesia loses to Thailand

The Indonesian national football team (Timnas) was defeated 4-0 by Thailand in the first leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final at the National Stadium, Singapore, on Wednesday night.

The first goal was scored by Thai captain and attacking midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin. It was Songkrasin’s third goal in the tournament.

During the match, the Thai team kept up the pressure on Timnas. The Thai “War Elephants” squad did not allow the Indonesian team to become comfortable with the ball.

The flow of the Thai team’s attacks led to a quick goal in the second minute through a left-footed strike by Songkrasin. He took advantage of Philip Roller’s pass that swerved past the Indonesian defender from the right side.

Thereafter, the intensity of Thailand’s pressure did not seem to decline, making Indonesian defenders struggle in their own territory.

In the 14th minute, Timnas’ Asnawi Mangkualam made a save right on the goal line from Bordin Phala’s kick.

Meanwhile, Indonesian defender Alfeandra Dewangga had a clean chance in the 41st minute. However, despite the absence of clearance efforts in front of the Thai goal, Dewangga’s kick soared away from the goalpost.

In the 45+2nd minute, Timnas’ Nadeo Argawinata heroically dismissed Phala’s curling shot, keeping the score at 0–1. The score remained unchanged until the game entered the break period.

In the second half of the game, the Thai players scored three more goals.

Earlier, the Indonesian national football team entered the final with an aggregate win of 5–3 over the Singaporean team.

The second leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final will be held on January 1, 2022.

Here is the lineup of both teams:

Indonesia: Nadeo Argawinata (goalkeeper), Moh. Edo Febriansyah, Rizky Ridho, Alfeandra Dewangga, Fachruddin Aryanto, Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar (captain), Rachmat Irianto, Ricky Kambuaya, Witan Sulaeman, Irfan Jaya, and Dedik Setiawan.

Thailand: Siwarak Tedsungnoen (goalkeeper), Yusef Dolah (39′, Pokklaw Anan), Philip Roller, Tristan Do, Kritsada Kaman, Weerathep Pomphun, Bordin Phala, Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul, Supachok Sarachat, Chanathip Songkrasin (captain), and Teerasil Dangda.

Jakarta Environment Office readies 1,260 cleaners for New Year’s Eve

The Jakarta Environment Office has readied 1,260 personnel to conduct clean-up activities during New Year’s Eve 2022.

“When required, the orange troops on standby can be quickly deployed to the field,” Head of the Jakarta Environment Office, Asep Kuswanto, stated here on Wednesday.

Kuswanto remarked that the number of staff to be dispatched was less as compared to the previous year before the COVID-19 pandemic, which reached around seven thousand people, on account of the government placing restrictions on New Year parties and celebrations.

They placed restrictions on celebrations and parties at public areas, as it might garner crowds.

The 1,260 officers comprise garbage truck drivers, crews, and teams that picked up garbage.

“In each sub-district, we dispatch at least 30 officers to stand by. In addition to personnel from the City Administration Sub-Department and the Sub-district Acting Unit of Environment, we also deploy officers from the Water Agency’s Cleaning Unit to assist and cooperate with the Village Public Facility Handler,” Kuswanto added.

His administration has also provided a channel to put forth complaints about trash handling. Apart from the Jaki Application, the public can also report to the Environment Office or the Jakarta Provincial Government.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan had issued Governor Decree Number 1473 on the implementation of Level I restrictions on Community Activities.

This decree listed special restrictions during Christmas and New Year that came into effect from December 24, 2021, to January 2, 2022.

Stunting rate among children in Surabaya decreased: Mayor

Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi pointed to a decline in the number of cases of malnutrition and stunting among children in 2021.

The mayor noted that the number of children in Surabaya suffering from severe nutritional detriment decreased, from 196 cases in 2020 to 159 cases in 2021. Cahyadi delivered the statement in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.

The number of cases of stunting, which was more than five thousand in 2020, also decreased to 1,300 cases after the mentoring program kicked off in October 2021.

The mayor remarked that the city government had collaborated with some universities to employ assistance in overcoming nutritional problems among toddlers.

Universities partnering up with the city government in providing assistance include Airlangga University, Wijaya Kusuma University, Hang Tuah University, Widya Mandala University, Nahdlatul Ulama University, Muhammadiyah University, Ciputra University, and the University of Surabaya (Ubaya).

Cahyadi noted that his administration was conducting programs to prevent stunting and handling its cases. They expected to bring down the number of cases to zero by January or February 2022.

The government has dispatched Family Empowerment (PKK) cadres, family planning cadres, and health workers in all sub-districts and villages to collect data on residents getting married, pregnant women, and families with newborns in need of assistance.

They also initiated the Stunting Prevention Group program, with Head of Surabaya Family Empowerment Driving Force Rini Indriyani at the helm, to find the causes and solutions to nutritional and stunting problems in children.

In addition, the city government provides food assistance thrice as well as provides vitamins and milk to toddlers, who suffered from stunting.

“The Surabaya City Government takes these steps until the baby is considered to be stunting-free based on the minimum height and weight,” the mayor noted.

Additionally, they hosted a special competition of menu preparation for stunted children.

“Most of these children love snacking, so we created a new menu tailored to the child’s nutrition. Finally, in these three months, the number has dropped drastically, as food and nutrition are assisted by nutritionists, who are also guided by universities,” the mayor concluded.

Positive tax revenue performance projected to continue in 2022: CITA

Non-governmental organisation Center for Indonesia Taxation Analysis (CITA) has projected the 2022 national tax revenue to continue to record positive performance after the country surpassed its tax revenue target this year.

Indonesia has recorded tax revenue worth Rp1,231.87 trillion (US$86.5 billion) in 2021, reaching 100.19 percent of the targeted Rp1,229.6 trillion (US$86 billion).

“Despite the positive projection, the government must set a strategy and plan to ensure that the policies enacted by the Tax Regulation Harmonization Law, such as the voluntary tax disclosure policy, can proceed smoothly,” CITA researcher Fajry Akbar noted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

A moderate tax revenue target, positive economic growth expected to surpass growth in 2021, an optimised tax supervision system, and the recently passed Tax Regulation Harmonization Law, effective by 2022, are several factors that may boost tax revenue in the country next year, the researcher noted.

The government’s success in surpassing the taxation revenue target has exceeded the public’s expectations, for which the feat must be lauded, Akbar emphasized.

The government must also strategize to face future challenges, such as the transition of the conventional, brick-and-mortar businesses model into a digital business that is projected to become permanent, he affirmed.

The researcher also highlighted the government’s persistence in providing generous taxation incentives in 2021 under the national economic recovery programme.

As of December 24, 2021, the government had spent a total of Rp63.16 trillion — reaching 100.5 percent of the budget limit — for tax incentives during the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted.

“Despite the national taxation revenue target having been reached, the government is consistent in supporting national economic recovery through taxation instruments for sectors heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Akbar stated.
