2-Year-Old’s Steering Wheel Play Leads to Tragic Accident Killing Two Siblings

Buriram: A tragic accident unfolded as a 2-year-old child sitting on his mother's lap while she was driving inadvertently caused a collision that led to the death of two siblings. The grandmother of the deceased children witnessed the heartbreaking event firsthand.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident took place on the evening of March 22. Pol. Lt. Col. Naphat Sutthithanakun, an investigator at Satuek Police Station in Buriram Province, was informed about a car accident involving a motorcycle on the Satuek-Non Champa Road in Ban Yang Ngam, Thung Wang Subdistrict. Upon arrival, the officer found a red Toyota Fortuner SUV submerged in a roadside pond and a severely damaged Honda motorcycle about 20 meters away. The accident claimed the lives of a 13-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother.

The 43-year-old woman from Buriram was driving the Fortuner, with her two sons aged 12 and 2. Fortunately, none of them were injured. The children's grandmother, overwhelmed with grief, recounted how her grandson had just asked for money to buy noodles before the siblings set off on their motorcycle. Tragically, they had only traveled 50 meters before the high-speed vehicle crossed lanes and struck them. The grandmother saw her grandson being thrown and later discovered her granddaughter under the vehicle with the help of officers.

In a conversation with the driver, the grandmother learned that the 2-year-old had been seated on his mother's lap, playing with the steering wheel. The driver mentioned that as she momentarily turned to look at her older son, the younger child inadvertently caused the vehicle to veer across the lane and collide with the motorcycle.
