‘Wuttichai’ Asserts DSI Lacks Authority in Senate Collusion Case

Bangkok: 'Wuttichai' insists that the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has no authority to intervene in the Senate collusion case. Mr. Wuttichai Kalyanamitra, a senator, stated that the Senators plan to employ committee mechanisms to counteract by inviting the minister and DSI to provide explanations. He also revealed that the legal team is currently discussing the matter, asserting their right to self-protection.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wuttichai clarified that the Senators have no opinion on the DSI's decision to defer the vote on the agenda to accept the complaint of corruption in the process of electing Senators as a special case. He emphasized the importance of allowing proceedings to follow regulations and the constitution. He noted that while some Senators question the DSI's authority to involve the Election Commission (EC), it is crucial to respect different legal perspectives. Mr. Wuttichai highlighted the Senators' duty to protect the constitution and themselves from societal accusations.

Mr. Wuttichai mentioned that if the case is accepted as a special one, the Senate committee might invite the minister and the DSI's Director-General to clarify the legality of their actions. He outlined the involvement of related committees such as the Committee on Law and Justice, the Committee on Independent Organizations under the Constitution, and others in addressing the issue.

He refrained from commenting on the legitimacy of the process but stressed that they are not interfering with any organization. Mr. Wuttichai reiterated that the EC holds authority in this matter, as per legal provisions, and that any DSI intervention should be preceded by an EC request. He urged fairness towards the senators and expressed readiness for investigation, given the evidence is straightforward. He emphasized the importance of respecting the roles of various agencies and organizations.

When questioned about potential political motivations, Mr. Wuttichai insisted that the senators remain unaffiliated with political parties or sides, maintaining a neutral stance. He expressed indifference to the situation, asserting their commitment to operating within their authority's scope.

Mr. Wuttichai also shared that Mr. Mongkol Surassajja, the president of the Senate, has not expressed any opinions on the matter. However, the actions in question have impacted the legislature, prompting the need for clarification.
