Bangkok: A cautionary tale has emerged from a woman's social media post detailing her alarming encounter with a cobra bite, after which she applied Betadine in a misguided attempt to neutralize the venom, only to later find herself in intensive care.
According to Thai News Agency, the woman recounted being bitten by a cobra at 5 a.m. on February 25. She initially cleaned the wound with a saline solution and applied Betadine, mistakenly believing it would counteract the venom. She then proceeded to work her morning shift. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and by 10 a.m. on February 26, she fainted and experienced difficulty breathing, leading to her urgent admission to the ICU.
Doctors administered the necessary cobra antivenom during her two-night stay in the ICU. Upon regaining consciousness, she reflected on the severity of her ordeal, acknowledging the support of loved ones who had expressed concern for her well-being. "The poison had entered my nervous system," she noted, expressing gratitude for the medical care and support she received.
The incident underscores the importance of understanding proper first aid for snake bites. Key steps include remaining calm, removing restrictive clothing or jewelry, and keeping the affected limb immobilized and below heart level to slow venom absorption. Immediate medical attention is critical, as symptoms can manifest between 15 minutes and 9 hours post-bite.
