Tourism Minister Advocates for Balanced Festive Celebrations in Thailand

Bangkok: The Minister of Tourism and Sports has confirmed that Loy Krathong, New Year, and Songkran celebrations will proceed, albeit with a more subdued tone. Fireworks will be allowed but in moderation, to maintain the tourist atmosphere and ensure Thailand remains a global travel destination.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, emphasized that a clear policy has been issued for the 2025 Loy Krathong celebrations. Discussions on the details are being expedited. He assured that the SEA Games will take place with readiness and internationally recognized standards. While reiterating that the Ministry's policy does not intend to impose prohibitions, he called for cooperation from the private sector in adjusting event arrangements. Events that have been agreed upon or invested in will be handled to minimize impacts on both Thai and international tourism.

Mr. Atthakorn addressed concerns about political groups linking the issue to politics, suggesting it may not be with ill intent. He stressed that decisions are based on correctness and appropriateness, not trends. The understanding of the majority of the public depends on the actions of civil servants and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. He acknowledged that while every decision is carefully considered, not all may align with public expectations, and he apologized for any misunderstandings.

Regarding upcoming New Year's and Songkran celebrations, Mr. Atthakorn confirmed that they will match the grandeur of previous years, contingent on appropriate organization. While efforts are being made to moderate excessive displays of joy, he recognized that international tourists expect to experience Thailand's vibrant atmosphere, culture, and cuisine. Fireworks will be permitted, though toned down in terms of lighting and color, with evaluations made on a case-by-case basis. Event organizers are encouraged to adapt formats, allowing for royal celebrations while maintaining the joyous spirit expected by visitors.
