Bangkok: "Thirat" announced the criteria to accelerate the resolution of the nationality issue and the order for those born in the Kingdom of Thailand who did not receive Thai nationality, with foreign fathers and mothers, to receive Thai nationality in general, which has come into effect.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Thirat Rattanawanich, Deputy Minister of Interior, Acting Minister of Interior, disclosed the implementation of the Cabinet resolution on 29 October 2014. This resolution approved the criteria to expedite the resolution of nationality and personal status for persons who have immigrated to the Kingdom for a long time and children born in the Kingdom. Proposed by the National Security Council Office, it allows children of aliens born in the Kingdom of Thailand who have not received Thai nationality, with alien fathers and mothers, whose parents were surveyed and registered up to 1999, and further surveyed under the strategy for solving the problem of personal status and rights between 2005 and 2011, to generally receive Thai nationality.
Ms. Thirat stated that she signed the announcement of the Ministry of Interior on the criteria to accelerate the resolution of the nationality problem. This announcement was published in the Royal Gazette and has come into effect, as proposed by the Ministry of Interior through the Department of Provincial Administration. The main points include stipulating that the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior shall act in accordance with this announcement and shall have the authority to consider problems and resolve obstacles to operate accordingly. The enforcement period of this announcement is set as 1 year from the date of announcement onwards, unless the Cabinet resolves to extend it, including determining conditions and criteria for requesting Thai nationality for the target group according to the Cabinet resolution.
This announcement designates that the Director of the Registration Administration Office, Department of Provincial Administration, shall consider and order the entry of Thai nationality in the population register of applicants in Bangkok. District officers will do the same for applicants outside Bangkok. The Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration is tasked with determining the criteria according to the announcement. The provincial administrative office will coordinate with provincial police to propose appointing a police officer at the superintendent level as a guarantor of good conduct. It also stipulates that legal officers shall propose revocation of nationality in cases of non-compliance with the criteria or behavior affecting national security.
Mr. Chaiwat Junthiraphong signed the announcement of the Department of Provincial Administration on the criteria and methods for applying for Thai nationality. It includes verification after acquiring Thai nationality according to the announcement of the Ministry of Interior, specifying the steps, methods, and forms for the process.
