Thailand-Myanmar TBC Meeting Initiates Daily Repatriation for Human Trafficking Victims

Bangkok: The Thai-Myanmar Local Border Committee (TBC) has launched a coordinated effort to manage the repatriation of up to 500 foreign nationals daily, aiming to aid victims of human trafficking and disrupt call center operations linked to these crimes. This cooperative initiative involves both Thai and Myanmar authorities and takes place in the Rajamanu Task Force meeting room in Mae Sot District, Tak Province.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting focused on strategies to assist nationals deceived by human trafficking gangs who wish to return to their home countries. The plan includes a three-step process to ensure that the assistance adheres to human rights standards. The first step involves compiling a list of victims. Myanmar officials are tasked with gathering names, nationalities, genders, photographs, travel documents, and passports of those seeking repatriation. In cases where victims lack passports, their information must be submitted to Thailand 3-5 days prior to the planned return.

The repatriation process prioritizes countries ready to receive their nationals, as some nations may have embassies or agencies unprepared to accept returnees. The 2nd Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge is designated as the primary location for the reception and dispatch of individuals wishing to go back to their home countries. This site is equipped to handle the daily intake of 500 victims, facilitating their return safely and efficiently.
