According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra addressed the nation to articulate Thailand's position on the increased tariffs imposed by the United States. The Prime Minister emphasized the challenges faced by Thailand in recent weeks, including a devastating earthquake, but expressed confidence in the country's resilience. She highlighted the government's comprehensive response to the crisis, which includes efforts to mitigate the impact of the US tariff increase of 36 percent on Thai exports, particularly affecting electronic goods, processed foods, and agricultural products.
The Thai government has proactively established a working group dedicated to addressing this issue since January, engaging with both the private sector and US representatives. Next week, Deputy Prime Minister Pichai is set to engage with key stakeholders in the US to communicate Thailand's strategic position as not merely an exporter but a dependable economic ally.
The government has formulated various policy proposals aimed at resolving the trade dispute, including increasing imports from the US in sectors such as energy, aviation, and agriculture. Thailand is also focusing on enhancing cooperation with significant US economic sectors and promoting Thai investment in the US. Additionally, efforts are underway to address import conditions and curb the misuse of Thailand as a transit route for goods falsely claiming Thai origin.
