People’s Party Prepares to Oppose Entertainment Venue Act Amid Concerns Over Government’s Intentions

Bangkok: The People's Party leader has arranged for MPs to prepare to dissect the Entertainment Venue Act. Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the Prachachon Party and leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives, expressed concerns regarding the upcoming House meeting on April 9th, where the draft bill on the operation of entertainment complexes will be discussed. He asserted that the government seems to be rushing the process, despite the potential widespread societal impact.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong emphasized that the People's Party is ready to engage in the discussions, but criticized the government's haste. He urged for more opportunities for open dialogue and criticized the government's decision to prioritize this bill over other important legislation.

Mr. Nattapong clarified that while the People's Party plans to oppose the bill, they lack the majority needed to veto it. He stated that the government could push the bill through the first reading with its majority. He highlighted that the People's Party's stance is not obstructive but rather a call for a more measured approach to the legislation.

The opposition leader also addressed comments from Mr. Wisut Chainarun, a government whip, who cautioned against excessive political maneuvering by the opposition. Mr. Nattapong defended the opposition's approach, insisting that they have adhered to protocol and have not engaged in political distortion. He called for transparency and adherence to the legislative agenda.

Lastly, Mr. Nattapong drew parallels between the current bill and past controversial legislation, warning of potential public unrest if the government proceeds without considering public opinion. He urged the government to act with caution to avoid repeating past political mistakes and escalating societal discontent.
