Thai and Chinese Chambers Call for Professional Government Amid Economic and Political Challenges


Bangkok: The Thai and Chinese business communities are urging for a professional government to address Thailand’s economic challenges and political instability. The call comes amid concerns about economic risks and the ongoing border conflict with Cambodia.



According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of appointing knowledgeable individuals to key economic ministries. He emphasized the need for a stable government to manage the Finance Ministry, the Commerce Ministry, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. He expressed concern over the current political instability and its impact on the country’s economy.



Mr. Aramwattananon also commented on the potential appointment of Sethaput Suthiwatnarueput, the current Governor of the Bank of Thailand, as Finance Minister. He acknowledged Mr. Suthiwatnarueput’s expertise but noted the uncertainty surrounding other potential nominees. He mentioned that the new government is expected to last only four months but hopes it could govern effectively for up to eight months, including the interim period.



Mr. Narongsak Putthaprommongkol, Chairman of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, echoed the need for political stability to attract foreign investment. After a recent visit to China, he reported that over 15 Chinese companies are planning to invest in Thailand next year, with each company expected to invest approximately 5 billion baht. He emphasized that a stable political environment would be crucial in boosting employment and the overall Thai economy.
