Songkran Festivities Bring Liveliness to Chiang Mai Moat

Bangkok: The moat around Chiang Mai is bustling with activity as locals and tourists alike dive into the vibrant celebrations of Songkran, also known as the Lanna New Year. The annual festival is marked by lively water play, with participants gathering around the moat to partake in the traditional festivities.

According to Thai News Agency, the recent cool weather in Chiang Mai, following rain in various areas, has created an ideal setting for the Songkran celebrations. At Thapae Gate, a popular spot connecting to the road encircling the moat, both residents and tourists have gathered earlier than usual, equipped with hats, sunglasses, and an array of water guns. The atmosphere is one of joy as people engage in friendly water fights, with some even riding motorcycles or bringing pickup trucks filled with water tanks to join in the fun.

The cultural richness of Chiang Mai is also on display during Songkran. Today, known locally as Wan Nao, marks the eve of the New Year. Residents are busy shopping for supplies to make merit the following day. Families participate in the tradition of placing Tung Cho Tung Chai on sand pagodas at temples, a gesture believed to honor ancestors and seek blessings for success in life.
