Bangkok: The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) invited experts from Nasdaq to discuss the future of capital market structure, trading, and technological innovation in an event aimed at enhancing the Thai capital market.
According to Thai News Agency, the event, titled 'The Future of Securities Markets and Trading' Evolution, Automation, and Innovations, featured Mr. Phil Mackintosh, Chief Economist at Nasdaq Inc. He addressed the future of capital market structure and trading by highlighting examples from the US stock market, a prominent global leader in this field. Discussions also covered future trading technologies and innovations, such as high-frequency trading order delivery speed, liquidity, and 24-hour trading. Additionally, the expansion of investment in assets like cryptocurrencies and derivatives, and the growth of retail investors in the US market were emphasized.
Dr. Soraphol Tulayasathien, Deputy Managing Director of the Stock Exchange of Thailand, noted the differences between the US and Thai stock markets. He pointed out that the US market is highly liquid and incorporates IPOs, tech stocks, and new trading technologies. The event also addressed past issues like the Naked Short problem in the US. Dr. Soraphol highlighted the significance of contact finance and marketing activities, such as using the US presidential election as a hedging tool, offering insights into future global market trends and lessons for Thailand.
The collaboration between SET and Nasdaq extends beyond discussions and includes strategic partnerships in technology development aimed at improving the efficiency of the Thai capital market. Efforts focus on trading supervision, risk management, and the adoption of AI technology. They are also exploring innovation opportunities, drawing on SET's expertise to provide solutions to Nasdaq clients in Southeast Asia. This partnership underscores SET's technological capabilities and the use of a trading system co-developed with Nasdaq since 2023, which integrates internationally recognized technology and innovation.
