Bangkok: The Senate convened to deliberate on the 2026 budget, highlighting key aspects of the proposed financial allocation framework. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, elucidated four critical points aimed at implementing government policies and supporting national development to tackle urgent issues.
According to Thai News Agency, the Senate meeting, chaired by Vice President of the Senate Mr. Boonsong Noisophon, examined the 2026 Budget Act involving a total of 3.78 trillion baht. Pichai Chunhavajira outlined the budget's key principles: implementing government policies aligned with national strategies and plans, utilizing the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, enhancing cooperation between central and local governments, and ensuring transparency and fairness in budget allocation.
Pichai emphasized the budget's role in national development by addressing urgent issues and promoting economic opportunities. The strategy aims to establish the country as a production center for agriculture and targeted industries, enhance infrastructure, and improve quality of life and welfare for the population. The focus is also on leveraging innovation and technology to boost government efficiency.
Further, Pichai discussed enhancing budget preparation efficiency by prioritizing urgent needs and reviewing projects for cost-effectiveness. Budget recipient units are encouraged to utilize extra-budgetary funds and consider partnerships for projects to reduce national budget burdens.
Pichai also highlighted compliance with the 2017 Constitution and relevant fiscal laws, emphasizing readiness and capacity of agencies in budget allocation decisions. The approved budget aims to support economic growth, trade, and public well-being, ensuring the sufficiency and necessity of budget allocations for national duties.
In his address, Pichai expressed gratitude to the senators for their input on the budget proposal, underscoring the government's commitment to improving budget operations for sustainable national benefits.
