Prison Inmate Clash in Pattani Results in One Death and Multiple Injuries

PATTANI: A violent altercation among inmates at Pattani Central Prison led to the death of one inmate and injuries to 12 others, prompting authorities to take swift action to control the situation. The incident occurred during a futsal competition, where tensions escalated among participants and spectators, leading to a brawl.

According to Thai News Agency, Pattani City Police responded immediately to the incident at the prison located in Tambon Bana, Amphoe Mueang. Upon arrival, rescue workers and hospital vehicles were already on the scene, transporting the injured inmates to Pattani Hospital. The deceased inmate suffered a fatal stab wound to the torso, while others sustained multiple injuries, including head wounds and bruising.

The altercation took place on a football field within the prison, where inmates from Ward 1 were engaged in the futsal event. The conflict reportedly started when emotions ran high among cheerleaders, leading to a physical confrontation with the players. Prison guards intervened to defuse the situation, and normalcy was eventually restored.

One inmate involved in the incident stated that his injuries were sustained while attempting to prevent further violence. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the incident to determine the individuals responsible, and charges will be filed accordingly.

Mr. Chaiyaporn Niyomkaew, Deputy Governor of Pattani Province, confirmed that order has been reestablished within the prison. He has instructed the prison commander to thoroughly reexamine the cause of the conflict. In response to the incident, the prison has suspended future activities and reiterated its commitment to enforcing stringent security measures to prevent similar occurrences.
