Police Investigation Progresses in Wat Muang Missing Money Case

Bangkok: The Phetkasem Police Station has announced significant progress in the investigation of the missing 10 million baht from the abbot of Wat Muang, underscoring that no crime leaves no traces. Officials are working diligently to uncover the whereabouts of the funds and have requested additional time to conclude their investigation. Locals, loyal to the abbot, have shown their support during this challenging time.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Pramote Chanboonkaew, Superintendent of Phetkasem Police Station, in collaboration with representatives from the Anti-Corruption Division, the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, and the National Office of Buddhism, has been actively involved in the investigation. The team visited the abbot's quarters to examine income and expenditure records and assess the origin of the abbot's assets. Detailed findings will be disclosed following the National Office of Buddhism's review of the documents.

During the visit, Phra Ratchawachara Phatthanathorn, the abbot of Wat Muang, cooperated with authorities but refrained from discussing the specifics of his interactions with officials. Supporters, including local residents and junior monks, have rallied behind the abbot, emphasizing his frugality and contributions to temple renovations. Concerns about internal temple politics were also raised by locals, hinting at possible underlying tensions.

Pol. Col. Pramote assured that the investigation is ongoing, with Phetkasem Police Station facilitating the efforts of multiple agencies tasked with tracing financial activities related to the temple and the abbot. The collected information is being meticulously analyzed to compile a comprehensive case file. The National Office of Buddhism is expected to address any discrepancies found within the temple's financial accounts.

Inquiries regarding a potential search of the temple premises remain unanswered, pending further actions from the involved agencies. Pol. Col. Pramote emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation, reiterating that every participant in the case remains a potential suspect. He reassured that no evidence of illegal activities, including allegations of gambling involvement, has been uncovered within the temple grounds thus far.

Despite the complexity of the case, the Phetkasem Police Station remains committed to maintaining peace and order within the temple. Efforts to retrieve CCTV footage continue, as authorities strive to explore every aspect of the investigation. Pol. Col. Pramote concluded by reaffirming the commitment to uncover the truth and uphold justice in a case that has garnered significant public interest.
