Mae Ai Residents Concerned Over Arsenic Detection in Urine Samples

Mae ai: Residents along the Kok River in the Mae Ai District of Chiang Mai Province are expressing growing concern over arsenic contamination in their environment. This anxiety follows reports of arsenic levels exceeding the standard in the Kok River, a vital water source for the community. The contamination has been a pressing issue for more than three months, affecting the daily lives and water usage of the local population.

According to Thai News Agency, recent developments have intensified fears after urine tests revealed arsenic in the bodies of at least two children in the community. Additionally, random testing conducted by the Chiang Mai Public Health authorities on 10 individuals from a high-risk group showed arsenic present in nine individuals. However, officials have assured the public that these levels do not exceed the national safety standards.

Residents remain on high alert, demanding more comprehensive testing and effective measures to ensure their safety and well-being. The Ministry of Public Health's confirmation that the detected arsenic levels are within acceptable limits has done little to alleviate the community's concerns, as they continue to seek assurance and transparency regarding the long-term health implications of this contamination.
