Police Call for Probation for Teenage Bomb Throwers in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai: Police have summoned a group of teenagers along with their parents after they threw bombs and caused chaos in Chiang Mai, urging them to adhere to probation terms and avoid further disturbances. Authorities warned that any future violations would result in prosecution.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident involved a group of teenagers riding motorcycles on Highway 108 in Doi Lor District, Chiang Mai Province, where they threw a bomb onto the road, alarming local residents. This act was captured on video by locals and shared on social media. The teenagers were identified as members of the DDR Doi Lor gang, who had allied with the Teel Pisat Hang Dong gang in a retaliatory effort against another group in Doi Lor district. However, the intended targets did not appear, prompting the teenagers to throw bombs in frustration.

The police tracked down over ten minors involved in the incident. Initially, the teenagers claimed their actions were provoked by a perceived slight involving a girlfriend, though the rival group did not engage. Authorities seized evidence including three homemade bombs, nearly six firecrackers, small stones used as shrapnel, some magnesium powder, and a roll of black electrical tape used in bomb-making. The teenagers were charged with 'gathering in groups of ten or more to cause unrest in the country.'

In a recent development, officials have summoned the teenagers and their guardians to the police station again, placing them on probation. Authorities emphasized that any recurrence of the offense would result in the parents or guardians facing up to three months of imprisonment, a fine of up to thirty thousand baht, or both. Additionally, if further evidence of possession of explosive devices is found, additional charges will be filed.
