PM Confirms Ongoing Discussions for Thailand’s MotoGP Contract Renewal

Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand has announced that there is still a possibility of renewing the MotoGP contract, currently under discussion. She emphasized that while some may perceive this as a political issue, she views it as a business and economic matter. The Prime Minister assured that if the renewal proves beneficial for the country, it will be pursued.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, commented on the impending expiration of the MotoGP contract with the Thai circuit in 2026. She mentioned that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports would conduct a detailed study of the situation. There remains an opportunity for further negotiations to explore potential outcomes.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of evaluating the financial aspects before deciding on the contract renewal. She instructed the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to present data on the economic impact of the event. She stressed that projects beneficial to the nation and its citizens would be continued, while those without significant advantages would require careful budgetary consideration.

Addressing speculations about political motivations due to the racetrack's association with Mr. Newin Chidchob, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party and owner of the racetrack, the Prime Minister stated that ownership is a separate issue. She reiterated the focus should be on the national interest and economic benefits. The collaboration between the private sector and the government should be scrutinized for its contribution to the country's income, rather than political affiliations.
