Pheu Thai Party Declines Participation as Opposition Whip

Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party has made a definitive announcement that it will not join as the opposition whip.

According to Thai News Agency, the party has decided not to participate in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Bhumjaithai Party and the People's Party (PPRP), who support the minority government and have requested to perform the role of parliamentary scrutiny rather than opposition in the MOA.

The Pheu Thai Party conveyed through a Facebook post that it is committed to being a strong opposition and will fully scrutinize the government. The party emphasized its decision not to serve as an opposition whip or partake in the MOA between the Bhumjaithai Party and the Prachachon Party. The decision stems from concerns that the minority government, whose opposition leaders supported the appointment of the prime minister without joining the government, sometimes acts as opposition and sometimes as a quorum for the government. This dual role raises doubts about the transparency of the opposition's performance.

The Pheu Thai Party maintained that any agreement or deal made between the Bhumjaithai Party and the Prachachon Party is a shared responsibility of those parties. The Pheu Thai Party underscored its responsibility to the public by committing to act as the opposition to scrutinize the government in a constructive, clear, and straightforward manner, within the parliamentary system and not within the MOA.
