Pheu Thai Party Calls for Secret House Meeting to Discuss MOU 43-44 Cancellation

Bangkok: The Pheu Thai Party has resolved to request a secret meeting of the House of Representatives to deliberate on the motion to cancel MOU 43-44, citing the sensitive nature of the issue and its potential impact on security and border residents. The party has also emphasized that the matter should not be handled by a special committee but should be forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration, as it overlaps with the Security Committee's responsibilities.

According to Thai News Agency, Danupon Punnakanta, a party-list MP and spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, addressed last week's opposition proposal to study the revocation of the 2000 and 2001 MOUs. Despite the Speaker of the House adjourning the meeting, Pheu Thai is prepared to engage in the debate if a new motion is proposed by opposition parties. The party insists on a closed session due to the issue's sensitive nature and its implications for security and border residents.

Mr. Danupon stated that following extensive debate, the matter should be directed to the Cabinet for further evaluation, negating the need for a special committee. Should the House majority favor establishing a committee, Pheu Thai would participate, ensuring quorum is maintained throughout the process. The opposition, if inclined to form a special committee, must exercise their voting rights.

The Pheu Thai Party argues against forming a special committee, as the National Security Committee has already reviewed the issue in the standing committee and has a subcommittee studying it. Hence, forming another committee would be redundant. Even if MOUs 43 and 44 proceed to the Cabinet, the standing committee has the authority to consider them.

Regarding discussions with coalition parties, Mr. Danupon mentioned that the government whip would present the Pheu Thai Party's resolution for discussion with coalition parties tomorrow.
