Bangkok: Cyber police have refunded money to victims of a call center gang posing as Subdistrict Administrative Organization officials inspecting land and tricking them into installing a land compensation refund application. This scam, which led to them transferring over 800,000 baht, is a scam targeting the elderly.
According to Thai News Agency, the cyber police swiftly acted upon reports of this fraudulent activity, which primarily targeted elderly individuals who were deceived into believing they were eligible for land compensation refunds. The perpetrators used video call technology to impersonate officials, adding a layer of credibility to their scam.
Victims were lured into downloading a fraudulent application that ostensibly facilitated the refund process. However, this application was designed to extract personal and financial information, leading to unauthorized transfers from their bank accounts. The police's intervention has resulted in the recovery of the stolen funds, amounting to over 800,000 baht.
Authorities are urging the public, especially the elderly, to remain vigilant against such scams. They are advised to verify any communication claiming to be from governmental bodies and to refrain from installing applications or providing personal information without proper verification. The police continue to investigate the call center gang to prevent future occurrences of this scam.
