Bangkok: More than 21,000 cases of illegal online goods have been seized as the government intensifies its crackdown on substandard imports, resulting in damages exceeding one billion baht. Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced the progress of efforts to address the issue of substandard products entering the country through online channels. The initiative, under the Subcommittee on Promotion and Upgrading of Thai SMEs and Solving the Problem of Substandard Products from Abroad, has shown tangible results from September to December 2024.
According to Thai News Agency, the government has prosecuted 21,227 cases of importers dealing with substandard products, leading to damages amounting to 1,137 million baht. The seized products include dietary supplements, food, medicine, medical supplies, cosmetics, electrical appliances, and more. The crackdown has involved strict inspection of imports and legal actions against violators to curb the influx of low-quality goods.
For medium to long-term measures, the government has tasked all relevant agencies to enhance the frequency and rigor of inspections. The Working Group on Suppression of Foreign Products and Businesses that Violate the Law will proactively target all substandard imports sold in the market. Additionally, efforts will focus on identifying and dismantling nominee businesses operating illegally across the nation.
Ms. Sasikarn emphasized the government's commitment to public safety and adherence to international product standards. She stated, 'The government is aware of the importance of public safety and is committed to creating product standards that comply with international laws. We will continue to crack down on opportunistic traders who import substandard products seriously in order to build confidence among Thai consumers and improve the quality of life of the people.'
