Bangkok: Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, presided over a significant ceremony to return the Buddha's relics, specifically the crystal tooth relic, to China. This event marked the end of a 73-day enshrinement period in Thailand, celebrated amidst an atmosphere of faith and strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
According to Thai News Agency, the ceremony took place at Sanam Luang Ceremonial Area, starting at 6:00 a.m. Mr. Suriya, serving as Chairman of the Committee for the Project to Invite the Relics of the Buddha, led the proceedings. He was joined by Mr. Maris Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Chusak Sirinil, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office, and commanders from the Royal Thai Air Force, including Air Chief Marshal Panphakdi Pattanakul. The sacred relic had been on temporary loan from China, enshrined in Thailand to honor His Majesty the King's 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations.
The ceremony was attended by monks from both Thailand and China, along with government officials and numerous devotees. It featured traditional elements such as the laying of garlands, chanting of Buddhist prayers, and the formal handover of the relics. Following the ceremony, the relics were respectfully placed on a royal carriage. The procession commenced at 7:00 a.m., traveling through several key roads before reaching Airport 2, Wing 6, Don Mueang at 8:00 a.m., where the relics were prepared for departure at 9:00 a.m.
Mr. Suriya emphasized the significance of the event, highlighting the enduring friendship between Thailand and China that has persisted for over five decades. He remarked that this collaboration is a testament to the bond of faith and friendship shared by both nations. The temporary enshrinement of the relic was not only a religious gesture but also a representation of the cultural cooperation that continues to thrive between Thailand and China.
The return of the Buddha's relics symbolizes a shared commitment to sustaining these cultural and diplomatic ties, ensuring they remain strong and beneficial for both countries in the future.
