Ministry of Culture Backs Nomination of Kruba Chao Sriwichai for UNESCO Recognition

Bangkok: The Ministry of Culture has announced its support for the nomination of "Kruba Chao Sriwichai" as an important person of the world. The Minister of Culture, Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakitchkosol, anticipates that UNESCO will honor him in 2026, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of his birth. This initiative aims to acknowledge the contributions of the Lanna monk to religion, culture, and social development.

According to Thai News Agency, Minister Sudawan shared these developments following a report on the progress of compiling information and preparing the nomination documents for Kruba Chao Sriwichai. The report was presented by Mr. Phongthep Manatrong, President of the Lamphun Provincial Cultural Council and chairman of the working group responsible for the document preparation. The Ministry of Culture, through the Department of Religious Affairs, is spearheading the mission to nominate Kruba Chao Sriwichai to UNESCO as part of a project celebrating significant historical anniversaries tied to the work of UNESCO member states.

The Minister highlighted this endeavor as a significant opportunity for Thailand to showcase its cultural heritage globally. Kruba Chao Sriwichai, revered as a world-class figure, is respected and believed in by many for his exceptional contributions to humanity in the realms of religion, education, culture, and peace. The nomination documents are expected to be submitted to the Secretariat of the National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO), Ministry of Education, by the October 2026 deadline.
