Minister of Justice Upholds Decision to Extend Royal Pardon for Thaksin

Bangkok: The Minister of Justice has agreed to extend the royal pardon for Thaksin Shinawatra, allowing the former Prime Minister to serve a one-year prison sentence in line with the Supreme Court's decision.

According to Thai News Agency, Justice Minister Pol. Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat has directed the Permanent Secretary of Justice to form a committee to evaluate the request for a royal pardon for Thaksin. The Cabinet Secretariat has reviewed this request and passed it on to the new Justice Minister for further input. However, the details of this matter remain confidential, as they are classified government documents.

The current Justice Minister has supported the original stance taken by former Justice Minister Police Colonel Thawee Sodsong. Thawee had recommended dismissing the appeal against Thaksin's sentence, which was proposed by the Department of Corrections. This decision ensures that Thaksin will serve the one-year imprisonment as mandated by the Supreme Court's ruling.
