Bangkok: The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has reported significant damage across 18 provinces following a massive earthquake. The disaster has resulted in 9 fatalities, with 79 individuals still missing in Bangkok. Efforts to locate survivors trapped under collapsed structures are ongoing.
According to Thai News Agency, the earthquake, which occurred on March 28, 2025, was triggered by the movement of the Sagaing Fault Group in Myanmar. With a magnitude of 8.2 and a depth of 10 km, the tremors were felt in 63 provinces, affecting thousands of residents. The situation is currently being managed, with the frequency of aftershocks showing a decreasing trend. The extensive damage includes affected structures in 85 districts, 173 sub-districts, and 144 villages, comprising 420 houses, 48 temples, 76 hospitals, 8 buildings, 23 schools, and 18 government offices.
In Bangkok, there have been 9 deaths, 79 missing persons, and 9 injured individuals. Other provinces have also reported significant damage to infrastructure and properties. Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lamphun, and Lampang are among the most severely affected areas, with numerous districts reporting damaged houses, temples, hospitals, and government buildings.
The Comptroller General's Department has responded by increasing the government reserve fund by 200 million baht to provide emergency assistance to the disaster victims. This fund will cover living expenses and operational costs for the affected individuals.
In terms of relief efforts, various agencies, including military, police, local administrative organizations, and volunteers, have mobilized to assist in the affected areas. A 48-person urban search and rescue team, equipped with advanced machinery and tools, has been deployed to support operations, particularly in Bangkok, where the situation is critical. Additionally, disaster and emergency relief areas have been declared in Pathum Thani, Phrae, and Bangkok.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is actively coordinating assistance and monitoring the situation. Affected individuals can report incidents and request help through the 'DDPM Report 1784' Line ID or the 24-hour safety hotline 1784 for immediate support.
