Lawyer Declares Thaksin a Political Victim During L¨se Majest© Case Proceedings

Bangkok: At the courtroom 902 of the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, accompanied by his personal lawyer Mr. Winyat Chatmontri, attended the first session to examine the plaintiff's witnesses in a high-profile l¨se majest© case. The lawsuit, filed by the Office of the Attorney General 8, Criminal Litigation Division, charges Mr. Thaksin with "insulting the monarchy" under the Criminal Code, Section 112, and offenses related to the Computer Act.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thaksin arrived at the Ratchada Criminal Court at 9:15 a.m. in his Rolls-Royce, evading media interviews. Notably, former Prime Minister Mr. Somchai Wongsawat was also present at the court premises. Mr. Winyat noted that this was the third date for witness examination and expected it to be the last, although the plaintiff might request additional appointments if necessary.

Mr. Winyat stated that three witnesses from the plaintiff's side were scheduled for the day's proceedings, with Mr. Thaksin attending in person to listen to the testimonies. When asked about Mr. Thaksin's potential media interaction, Mr. Winyat expressed uncertainty, emphasizing that decisions regarding public statements were beyond his control.

Despite the serious charges, Mr. Winyat asserted there was no cause for concern. He argued that the accusations against Mr. Thaksin were politically motivated, claiming that Thaksin had not received justice from the outset. Mr. Winyat expressed confidence in the evidence and investigation and remarked that it was now up to the court to weigh the evidence and make a judgment.
