Khao Kheow Zoo’s Animal Care Practices Defended Amid Criticism

Chonburi: "Chalermchai" confirms that Khao Kheow Zoo raises bouncy pigs according to international standards. Chalermchai counters "Peta" that Khao Kheow Zoo raises bouncy pigs in accordance with international standards of hygiene, causing a mother pygmy hippo to have 7 babies, insists that many organizations have certified it, urges "Peta" to come and see for himself.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, explained after PETA, or the Animal Protection Organization, stated that Khao Kheow Open Zoo brought 'Moo Deng' to be exhibited as an act of exploitation, animal cruelty, and unsanitary living conditions. He said that the director of Khao Kheow Zoo, who takes care of Moo Deng, has already come out to clarify all issues. He confirmed that the zoo takes care of Moo and Deng according to the principles of taking care of wild animals in every respect, including welfare, housing, and health.

At the same time, many academic organizations will come out to clarify whether this matter is inaccurate or not, so that Thai zoos do not lose their credibility. When the information is clear, it should be explained to Thais and foreign tourists so that it does not affect tourism.

As for inviting PETA or having an animal conservation organization confirm how well the Khao Kheow Zoo is raising the bouncy pig, Mr. Chalermchai said that there are many organizations that want to confirm this matter and would like to call on PETA to come and see the facts. Although pygmy hippos are endangered animals, Thailand has bred many of them. As for whether they are the most in the world, he cannot answer that. However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, the bouncy pig's brother was born at that time, which would have made him famous. However, at that time, the zoo was in a closed system. He reiterated that zoos in Thailand take care of the animals in a hygienic manner and are constantly developing and improving.
