Sai buri: A fierce clash unfolded in Sai Buri as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operation turned deadly, resulting in the deaths of an EOD officer and a suspect. The incident began when a bomb detonated at a Ponoh institute in Village No. 4, Bang Kao Subdistrict, Sai Buri District, prompting a response from the 44th Border Patrol Police's investigative and bomb disposal teams. A suspect, Mr. Surhafisi, 29, was apprehended with a 9mm pistol, ammunition, and an arrest warrant.
According to Thai News Agency, reinforcements from Pattani Province and the Southern Border Provinces Ranger Force joined the operation. Officers suspected additional criminals were hiding within the Ponoh Institute. After several hours, they dispersed to search the dormitories. During the search, Pol.Sgt.Maj. Somsak Naksen, an EOD officer, was shot by a suspect hiding in a closet. The suspect attempted to flee by firing at officers but was shot dead in the exchange.
Pol.Sgt.Maj. Somsak was transported to Somdej Phra Yupparat Sai Buri Hospital with severe injuries but succumbed to his wounds due to significant blood loss from multiple bullet injuries.
Authorities continue to secure the area, utilizing patrols and drones to locate any remaining perpetrators. The deceased suspect, Mr. Muhammad Jedosama, was wanted for the shooting of a Village Defense Volunteer officer in Yala Province in 2020 and was implicated in other criminal activities.
The Royal Thai Police extended their condolences to the family of Pol.Sgt.Maj. Somsak Naksen, praising his dedication and bravery. They assured his family would receive full benefits and welfare as a tribute to his service and sacrifice during the operation in Sai Buri District.
