Dusk Show Revival: 81-Year-Old Bassist Delights Chiang Mai Audiences

Chiang Mai: Dusk Show offers a unique musical experience with veteran musicians captivating audiences with their timeless skills. Niwat Kongkaew, known as Paeng, continues to impress as an 81-year-old bassist, drawing music lovers to Charoen Dee shop on Phra Pok Klao Road every Saturday. His performances attract both Thai and foreign tourists, who are often astonished by his seamless play and vibrant energy despite his age.

According to Thai News Agency, Paeng, a former member of the legendary heavy rock group VIP band, has been performing for nearly five decades. His journey began with the VIP band almost 50 years ago, alongside Guitar Kings Laem Morrison. Although the band has since dwindled to three surviving members, Paeng's passion for music remains undiminished. Following a stint in the sound system business, he returned to the stage two years ago, embracing the evolving music landscape while maintaining his distinctive style.

Paeng's dedication to his craft has required him to adapt to contemporary music trends and collaborate with younger musicians. Despite the challenges, his love for music keeps him energized and in peak form. The VIP band, originally formed in Udon Thani in 1973, consisted of five members. Alongside Paeng, two other members, Rungsak Isaraphon (Laem Morrison), guitarist, and Ekaman Phothiphanthong (Mon), drummer, are still performing, while lead singer Win Kampee and keyboardist Roning Sahaesarae have passed away.
