Bangkok: The Democrat Party is gearing up to elect a new party leader within the next 60 days following the unexpected resignation of Mr. Chalermchai. The party spokesperson, Jenjira Rattanapian, confirmed the resignation, citing Mr. Chalermchai's health concerns and his intention to prioritize his well-being. Despite stepping down from the leadership role, Mr. Chalermchai continues to be a member of the party, with Mr. Pramuan, the party's MP, serving as the acting leader for the interim period.
According to Thai News Agency, the Democrat Party is in the process of organizing an executive committee meeting to elect a new party leader, contingent upon the approval from the Election Commission (EC). The official notification of Mr. Chalermchai's resignation, submitted through a representative, is pending acknowledgment from the EC. Thanitphon Chaianan, the party's director, revealed that the EC had informed him of the resignation, prompting a notification to Mr. Decha Isara Khaothong, the party secretary-general, and other executives to proceed according to the party's regulations and legal requirements.
Mr. Thanitphon further explained that although Mr. Chalermchai had never previously indicated any intention to resign, the party now faces the task of appointing a new leader within the stipulated 60-day period. As the situation stands, no discussions have taken place regarding potential candidates for the leadership position. The party is committed to adhering to its internal regulations as it navigates this leadership transition.
