Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense engaged in a telephone discussion with the US Secretary of Defense, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation. According to Thai News Agency, Maj. Gen. Thanathip Sawangsaeng, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, disclosed that Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, had a telephone conversation with Mr. Pete Hegseth, the newly appointed US Secretary of Defense. The conversation was part of a series of introductory calls made by the US Secretary to discuss security issues with defense leaders from countries like Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. During the call, the Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Mr. Hegseth on his appointment and emphasized the importance of strengthening military relations with the US, Thailand's oldest ally in Southeast Asia. This effort aligns with the goals outlined in the Joint Vision Statement 2020 for the Thai-US Defense Alliance. Mr. Phumtham expressed gratitude for the US's ongoing sup port in military equipment procurement and educational opportunities for Thai defense personnel. Thailand particularly values the US support provided through the 'IMET' project, which plays a crucial role in developing the skills of Thai military leaders and soldiers. The Deputy Prime Minister urged for continued support in this area, highlighting the project as a cornerstone of the enduring military relationship between the two nations. He also requested sustained cooperation in military equipment assistance, aiming to solidify the strategic partnership in the region. The US Secretary of Defense commended the longstanding relationship and cooperation between the two countries. He reassured that strengthening security ties with allies like Thailand is a priority under the US President's policy. Mr. Hegseth also expressed the US's readiness to support Thailand in terms of security and defense industry collaboration and looked forward to meeting in person. The leaders also exchanged views on the development of international security and potential industrial cooperation, further solidifying their commitment to mutual strategic interests.
