Debt Collection Turns Deadly as Debtor’s Relative Fatally Stabs Creditor’s Sibling

Bangkok: A tragic incident unfolded in the Ratchathewi District when a debt collection attempt spiraled into a violent altercation, resulting in the death of a young man. CCTV footage captured the harrowing scene where two siblings sought to recover a debt of 3,000 baht, but the situation escalated, leading to the younger sibling being fatally stabbed by a debtor's relative.

According to Thai News Agency, the altercation occurred around 8:00 p.m. when the siblings approached a group to discuss the debt. The situation intensified as a man in a white shirt lunged with a knife, while another individual in a green shirt intervened, preventing any de-escalation. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with the victim being stabbed multiple times before succumbing to his injuries at the scene, despite rescue efforts.

The incident prompted immediate police intervention, leading to the detention of those involved. However, tensions flared outside the Phaya Thai police station as the deceased's relatives expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived leniency towards the assailants. Mr. Apiwat, the deceased's brother, recounted the events leading up to the tragedy, stating that their attempt to reclaim the borrowed sum was met with hostility and violence, culminating in his brother's death.

Further complicating matters, the assailant reportedly inflicted self-harm, claiming injuries necessitating hospital treatment. This development led to frustration among the victim's relatives, who questioned why charges had not been pressed against the attacker, Mr. Sitthiwit or 'Oh,' despite police assurances of fair treatment for all parties.

The police have confirmed that charges of 'jointly fighting' will initially be brought against three individuals involved, including a relative of the deceased. However, the stabbing suspect has not yet faced charges, as authorities remain cautious about potential unrest among the victim's grieving family members.
