Constitutional Court Awaits Expert Opinions on Referendum for Constitutional Amendment

Bangkok: The Constitutional Court is currently awaiting the opinions of experts before reaching a decision on whether to hold a referendum to amend the constitution. This development follows a petition submitted by the President of the National Assembly, which was forwarded to the Constitutional Court for consideration regarding the duties and powers of the National Assembly as outlined in Section 210, paragraph one (2) of the Constitution. The central issue under review is the number of times a referendum must be held when amending the constitution.

According to Thai News Agency, the Constitutional Court judges met to deliberate on the petition, and it was determined that the opinions of expert witnesses are necessary for the court's decision-making process. As part of this process, the court has requested that relevant experts prepare and submit written opinions based on the issues identified by the court.

During today's meeting, the Constitutional Court received and accepted some expert opinions that were submitted according to the court's determined issues. However, the court decided that, in order to make a well-informed ruling, it is essential to wait for the complete set of opinions from all relevant expert witnesses. The court emphasized the importance of having comprehensive expert input to aid in their consideration and eventual ruling on the matter.
