Bangkok: Phumtham sent a lawyer to file a defamation complaint against Dr. Warong after he gave a speech at Victory Monument on August 2.
According to Thai News Agency, attorneys Kanawat Aran and Thongchai Pornset, authorized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, acting as Prime Minister, filed a complaint with the Phaya Thai Police Station against political activist Dr. Warong Dechgitvigrom. The charges include defamation by publication and involvement in disseminating live footage or speech content that allegedly slandered the government and Mr. Phumtham by entering false information into a computer system. This legal action was initiated following Dr. Warong's speech at the Ruam Palang Phaendin Defend Sovereignty rally on August 2nd.
Mr. Thongchai revealed that the speech contained false information and slanderous content against Mr. Phumtham and the government's handling of the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. The speech was broadcast live on media and social media platforms. Various video clips from media appearances were presented as evidence to the investigators. The primary focus is on prosecuting Dr. Warong on defamation charges. Additionally, the case involving the entry of false information into a computer system could be a criminal offense. The police are tasked with investigating and identifying those involved or those supporting the crimes to ensure they are brought to justice.
Regarding potential charges against other political leaders or activists who spoke on stage, Mr. Thongchai stated that he was authorized to file a complaint only against Dr. Warong. However, he mentioned that if the police find Dr. Warong to be an accomplice or collaborator in the crime, they will face legal action, as entering false information into a computer system is a criminal offense and could be considered an accomplice.
