Bangkok: "Bhumtham" discussed with the US ambassador the Thai-Cambodian border issue, expressing satisfaction with the two countries' continued negotiations and opening the area to international observers. He plans to meet with the Chinese ambassador tomorrow.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, revealed after meeting with US Ambassador to Thailand Robert F. Godec, that they discussed several issues, one of which was the Thai-Cambodian border. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding Thailand's sovereignty, maintaining peace, and resolving issues through dialogue, avoiding violence. He emphasized the importance of truthful communication and adherence to international law, as Thailand remains committed to bilateral dialogue with Cambodia. He acknowledged the complexity of the matter but expressed optimism for resolution through mutual benefit.
Mr. Bhumtham also mentioned that the US ambassador appreciated Thailand's hospitality towards the US senators who visited Ubon Ratchathani Province. The visit aimed to provide firsthand insight into the region and the desire for peace from all sides. Additionally, he shared plans to meet with the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand.
In response to questions about the US ambassador's perspective on the Cambodian border issue, Mr. Phumtham conveyed satisfaction with the current progress and thanked the ambassador for initiating dialogue and acting as a temporary observer at the General Border Committee meeting in Malaysia. ASEAN military attaches have been effective in their roles, leading to the formation of an IoT team shortly after the meeting. Current inspections in various areas are expected to facilitate smoother dialogue, with reports to be submitted to the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee and the General Border Committee between September 8th and 10th. Thailand reiterated its desire for continued dialogue between the two nations.
When asked about communication of the border issue to President Donald Trump, Mr. Phumtham stated that the US ambassador assured him of immediate reporting following their discussions.
