Bangkok Implements Safety Measures for Chinese New Year Festival

Bangkok: Bangkok is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its residents during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. The city is urging people to exercise caution and reduce activities that may contribute to air pollution and fire risks. The festival, which runs from January 27 to 29, 2025, is traditionally marked by lighting candles, incense sticks, burning joss paper, and firecrackers, potentially increasing PM2.5 dust levels and fire hazards.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapal, a spokesman for Bangkok, emphasized the heightened risk of fires due to the dry conditions during this period. In response, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, signed an announcement on January 7, 2025, outlining measures to prevent potential dangers during the festival. These measures include setting up hazard watch points throughout the city, especially in high-risk areas like shrines and event venues, and ensuring adequate fire safety resources are available.

The city is also encouraging the use of electric incense and candles to minimize fire risks and reduce PM2.5 emissions. Citizens are advised to avoid lighting large quantities of incense or joss paper indoors, and to perform these activities away from wind and fuel sources. In case of a fire, residents should contact the Phra Ram Radio Center at 199 and evacuate immediately if necessary.

For the safe use of firecrackers, Bangkok authorities recommend lighting them in open areas, away from flammable materials, and maintaining a safe distance. Supervision is required for children near firecracker activities, and the Erawan Center can be reached at 1669 for any accident or injury.

The city is also requesting businesses closed for the holiday to check their fire safety systems, and residential buildings to inspect electrical systems and gas installations. Travelers are advised to ensure vehicle safety, follow traffic laws, and report emergencies on highways to the Highway Police Division at 1193.
