ASEAN Makha Bucha Week Unites Thailand and Laos in Ubon Ratchathani and Champasak

Ubon Ratchathani: The Ministry of Education has organized the 'ASEAN Makha Bucha Week' to strengthen ASEAN relations between Thailand and Laos at the Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Phrao Temple and Luang Pakse Temple in Champasak Province, scheduled for February 8-9, 2025. This initiative aims to promote friendship and cultural exchanges between the two nations through religious and cultural activities.

According to Thai News Agency, the event is chaired by Mr. Chaiphon Suk-iam, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs, in collaboration with government agencies, the private sector, and the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Cultural Office. The celebration at Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Phrao, Sirindhorn District, will feature Buddhist ceremonies, cultural demonstrations like making Khan Mak Beng, and musical performances such as "The Dharma Line of the Great River Sitandon."

On February 9, the Lao People's Democratic Republic will host Buddhist activities at Wat Luang Pakse in Champasak Province, marking the 75th anniversary of Thai-Laos diplomatic relations. The agenda includes a Buddhist chanting ceremony and ASEAN arts and cultural performances aimed at fostering knowledge exchange in religion, arts, and culture between Thailand and Laos.

Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Phrao, renowned for its glowing Kalpavriksha tree, has a rich history dating back to when it was a forest devoid of habitation. It was revitalized and renamed in 1992, becoming a significant cultural and spiritual site. Meanwhile, Wat Luang Pakse, positioned where the Xedon and Mekong rivers meet, is a cultural and religious hub in southern Laos, known for its beautiful Buddhist art and gardens.

Mr. Chaiyapol Suk-iam highlighted the importance of 'Makha Bucha Day' in Buddhism, marking the day Buddha preached the Ovadapatimokkha to 1,250 Arahants. This day encourages Buddhists to engage in chanting, observing precepts, and meditating, aligning with the core teachings of Buddhism. Ubon Ratchathani, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, serves as a pivotal site for such events, bridging connections with neighboring countries like Laos and Cambodia.

The event underscores the role of religion in fostering peace and security, promoting the ASEAN community's growth, and enhancing Thailand's international standing. Through initiatives like these, the Thai society aims to uphold its moral and ethical values while preserving Buddhism as an integral part of the nation's identity.
