Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has indicated that the decision on the new chairman of the Bank of Thailand board is expected to be finalized within the next two days. Thaksin mentioned that he is not aware of the Ministry of Finance's nominee for the position but highlighted the importance of selecting a leader with adequate knowledge.
According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin addressed concerns raised by the Economics for Society group, which submitted an open letter opposing the appointment of Kittiratt Na Ranong as the chairman of the Bank of Thailand board. Thaksin mentioned he had not reviewed the full content of the letter but acknowledged the criticisms regarding the appointment process. He stated that after speaking with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, it is anticipated that a decision will be made soon.
Thaksin remarked on the process for appointing the chairman, emphasizing that it involves a proposal from the Bank of Thailand and the Ministry of Finance, followed by a selection committee's decision. He reiterated that the ideal candidate must possess leadership and knowledge, although he is currently unaware of who the Ministry of Finance might propose.
When questioned about potential candidates, Thaksin expressed that the role requires individuals who are both prepared and willing to make sacrifices for the country. He noted the challenge in finding such leaders, possibly due to his long absence from the country, which has resulted in a lack of familiarity with current potential candidates. Despite these challenges, Thaksin assured that efforts are ongoing to identify a suitable leader.
